EDMOND, Oklahoma (Reuters) -- An Oklahoma man desperate to save his marriage by appearing like a hero to his wife ended up in police custody on suspicion of staging a crime. He hired "burglars" and foiled their fake robbery attempt, police said on Friday.
 
Trent Spencer, 27, of Edmond, north of Oklahoma City, was charged this week with the misdemeanor crime of filing a false report, said police spokeswoman Glynda Chu.
 
According to police, Spencer, a high school teacher, paid two students $100 each to break into his house and try to make off with a stereo.
 
The masked students tied his wife with duct tape and her husband was in the house just in time to foil the supposed crime, police said.
 
Police said Spencer attacked the two in a choreographed fight, even hitting one with a board that he had cut to break in half. The plan was going well until his wife freed herself and called police, something Spencer did not anticipate, police said.

You know what, though?  That guy has got egg ALL over his face and it will be a looooooonnnnngggggg time before he'll be able to go out in public again without embarrassment.  I'm sure the men he works with will never let him live this down.

Maybe he watched too much wrestling like me! Though I still wouldnt do that! So what happened to the guy now? He wasnt put to jail or fined or something? Ruperty is right though, and I think the embarrassment he will get for the rest of his life(from society and from deep within) is a punishment itself.

The likely reward for what happened is a divorce.  What he did, while trying to make himself look like a hero, was also deliberately to subject her to something terrible.  Having people break into your house and tie you up with duct tape, while you feel helpless and terrified, and will likely have nightmares and post traumatic stress, even after you found out it was fake (which he did NOT intend to tell her), is a horrible thing to subject someone to.  His idea of how to be a good mate is terribly skewed.

So they are getting a divorce?  In my mind, I'd have to wonder what else he'd be capable of lying about or what other deceitful behavior he'd participate in if I were his wife.  The trust just would be there anymore.
