I hope all of our phillipine friends are their families are OK.  I pray that this weather situation begins to improve immediately.

Quote:
More than 300 people are feared dead as a result of flash floods and landslides triggered by a storm in the Philippines, officials say.
In the worst-hit areas of Quezon province, east of Manila, houses, bridges and roads were swept away.

Officials said thousands of people had been left homeless and bad weather was hindering the search for survivors.

The floods came just a week after storms left about 160 people dead or missing.

Another storm, nicknamed Nanmadol, is approaching the islands. Officials warn it is more powerful than the last one.

The latest storm hit northern and central areas of the Philippines on Monday.

Yes, I never realized how worse the storm was until I caught a news earlier this morning. I was shocked that many people have died. They are also having a warning of another storm approaching, which will have the same path as the storm last week.

The storms swept provinces south of the Luzon island, so what we (provinces surrounding Manila) experienced are just continuous rains (and floods).

I hope we can get pass this. Thanks for the prayers and good thoughts. I'll also be praying for my fellow Filipinos who are in the path of the storm.

INQ7.net

TYPHOON “Yoyong” (international code name: Nanmadol) continued to move closer to slamming the eastern coast of Luzon Thursday, with several areas placed in the highest storm alert, the latest tropical cyclone update from the Philippine weather bureau said.
As of 5:00 a.m. Thursday, the typhoon was spotted 180 kms east of Virac, Catanduanes with strongest sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 4:30 a.m. bulletin.

Moving west northwest at 35 kph, Yoyong is expected to make its landfall over Aurora province Thursday night, PAGASA added. The storm would then cross the provinces of Nueva Vizcaya, Pangasinan, Benguet and La Union.

Typhoon Signal No. 4 has been raised over Catanduanes, northern Quezon, Polillo Island, Aurora, Quirino, and Isabela. These areas will experience winds of more than 186 kph.

PAGASA advises coastal  residents in these areas to seek higher ground to avoid big waves. Residents in low-lying areas have also been alerted against possible flash floods and landslides.

Storm Signal No. 3 has been raised in the provinces of Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, the rest of Quezon, Rizal, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao, Benguet, Mt. Province, Kalinga, and Cagayan. These areas will experience 100-185 kph winds.

Storm Signal No. 2 has been hoisted over Sorsogon, Albay, Burias Island, Marinduque, Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Bataan, Pampanga, Zambales, Tarlac, Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos provinces, Abra, Apayao, and Metro Manila. Sixty to 100 kph winds are expected in these areas.

Masbate, Romblon, Mindoro, Lubang Island and Batanes are all under Storm Signal No. 1 wherein winds would not exceed 60 kph.

Footage aired on GMA Network's “Unang Hirit” newscast showed strong rains and winds were starting to be felt in Naga City.

A report on the same newscast, quoting the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), said classes in all levels have been suspended in Central Luzon, Southern Luzon and Metro Manila.

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) also suspended the Unified Vehicle Volume Reduction Program or the “number coding” scheme in Metro Manila except in Makati City and the municipality of San Juan.

Another “Unang Hirit” report said Philippine Airlines and Asian Spirit have canceled domestic flights in the areas that would be affected by Yoyong.

The Philippine Air Force also announced the suspension of all its rescue operations in areas hit by Typhoons “Unding” and “Violeta” and tropical depression “Winnie”.

These areas are expected to bear the brunt of Yoyong’s fury when the typhoon makes its landfall Thursday evening.

Winnie has so far claimed 407 lives due to landslides and floods, according to an official report of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).

Signal no. 4 is the highest warning level of typhoons here... so this typhoon Nanmadol would be equivalent to a hurricane there in the US....

well the typhoon has just went past the Philippines around 4am, I think, it was a pretty short event as to what the weather bureau predicted... and it moved north, farther from Manila after it collided with our two mountainranges on Luzon island... it lost it strength as well....

today is pretty much back to normal here in Manila, we just had showers this morning with a slight wind....  but last night the wind was strong that you can feel yourself pushed by the wind... it has caused a lot of umbrellas to break last night heheheh.....

anyways... still it has left many families homeless and agricultural products drowned by the floods,  some casualties and fatalities in the hardly hit Pacific coastal provinces, but power was turned off to many parts of Metro Manila...

today also, classes for all levels (primary to college) were suspended and goverment offices are closed after our president declared this yesterday due to the forecasted bad weather.... but of course since i'm working for the private sector, we have work... Sad  well.. anyways its ok... we still have no power at my parents house this morning... Cheesy

This is just horrible.    Sad

Philippines: 1,000 dead or missing
Friday, December 3, 2004 Posted: 4:26 AM EST (0926 GMT)

REAL, Philippines -- Rescuers are battling to reach thousands of people left stranded in the Philippines, where storms have left 1,000 people dead or missing.

The latest typhoon, which sliced through the nation on Friday, led to the evacuation of almost 170,000 people.

Typhoon Nanmadol made landfall late Thursday along the northeast coast with sustained winds of up to 185 kilometers (115 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 220 kilometers per hour, slicing through the main island of Luzon Friday morning, The Associated Press reported.

The news agency puts the human toll at more than 550 people dead, with hundreds missing.

Schools and government offices remained closed Friday in Manila and the rest of the country, the presidential office announced.

"Based on reports from our troops in the field, they have listed 479 dead and 560 missing in three towns in Quezon province," Reuters quoted military spokesman Lt. Col. Buenaventura Pascual as saying.

Hundreds of soldiers battled to find and rescue scores of people marooned by rising floodwaters before the typhoon made its landfall.

Nanmadol is the third major storm to strike the region in the past two weeks.

The coast guard prevented ferries, small boats and fishermen from leaving ports, and the air force said the bad weather had basically grounded its rescue fleet.

The typhoon drenched Manila and most of the country, causing flooding on some streets and temporary power outages in the capital.

"We are very concerned and we are not sure how we can avoid further casualties in these areas," Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Soliman told Reuters.

"If you go on the slopes, the ground is very loose. If you go on (lower) ground, the water can rise and you might have mudslides."

The recent spate of storms has caused an estimated $14.7 million in damage to crops, livestock and fisheries, Reuters quoted the agriculture department as saying. The government has appealed for international aid.

Japan said it would provide tents, generators, water tanks and other items, and the United States said it would give $100,000 in aid and provide engineers to help clear roads and build bridges.

Illegal logging has been blamed for exacerbating the disaster, and President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has ordered a nationwide crackdown on the practice.

Relief operations are based in the three towns of Real, Infanta and General Nakar, a region of about 110,000 people on the eastern foothills of the Sierra Madre mountain range.

In Real, where more than 100 people have been killed, residents trudged through deep mud to try to reach higher ground before Typhoon Namadol hit.

Chocolate-brown mud buried swathes of Real and two nearby fishing and farming villages.

One woman frantically called ABS-CBN television, begging to be rescued from a rooftop.

"All my relatives are dead. I survived because I was able to go to the roof," The Associated Press quoted Tessie Munar, owner of a Quezon province resort, as saying.

"My sister is dead, my husband is dead."

A navy gunboat set to bring food and medicine to Real was forced to turn back Wednesday due to rough seas and debris, AP quoted Capt. Geronimo Malabanan as saying.

Regional military commander Maj. Gen. Pedro Cabuay said about 400 troops set out for Real on foot with relief supplies in their backpacks and in boxes perched on their heads.

He said the route to Real had been blocked by as many as 20 landslides, AP reported.

"We are not concerned so much about saving property. We just want to save lives," said Filipina America, mayor of another hard-hit town, Infanta.

Even for a country used to typhoons, the devastation has been staggering with large portions of the northeastern Philippines under water.

Many of the dead were killed when torrential rain and wind sent water, logs and mud cascading through three coastal towns.

"There are a lot of persons missing so we expect the figure to rise," Philippine Defense Undersecretary Ernesto Carolina said.

A typhoon and another storm last week killed at least 87 people and left 80 others missing in the east.

Absolutely tragic.  First the terrible floods in Haiti and now these floods in the Phillipines.

Prayers for the families of those who have suffered by these floods.  Warm thoughts being sent to all our phillipino members and their families.
