ARVADA, Colorado (AP) -- A 40-year-old woman held sex and drug parties with teenage boys, telling police she wanted to be a "cool mom," authorities say.

Sylvia Johnson allegedly provided marijuana, methamphetamine and alcohol to eight boys at parties held at her suburban Denver home in 2003 and 2004. According to court papers, she admitted having sex with five of the boys.

One of the boys told his mother, and Johnson was arrested in December and charged with offenses including sexual assault and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

According to court papers, Johnson told investigators she was not popular in high school and had finally started "feeling like one of the group."

"She described herself as a 'cool mom,'" police said.

Authorities did not say how many children she has or whether any of them were at the parties.

A message left at the number listed for Johnson was not immediately returned.

This is sad but it happens all the time (not sure about the sex part). I had a friend in highschool and his mom use to buy all our booze for us and let us party with her, her exuse was, atleast I know where my boys are.

Now, I have a slightly different perspective on this whole thing (not this woman specifically, but parents who allow their children to have a party in general).

When I was in highschool, it was New Year's Eve and we had a party at a friend's house where the parents were there. We gave them the $ and they picked up the alcohol at the store. They knew that we were going to drink no matter what on that night and they wanted to provide us a safe and controlled environment. They stayed upstairs and sober and we partied downstairs. When you arrived you had to turn your keys over and were not allowed to leave until the morning after everyone ate breakfast. No one went to that party that did not already intend to drink that night, the only thing that changed was we had a safe place to go to where sober adults could step in if anything went wrong. I told my mother about it at the time and she wasn't upset or unhappy that they did that, she understood we were going to drink that night and preferred us to do so in the safest environment possible. Now maybe the difference here is motivation. His parents never did this because they wanted to be "cool" and they certianly didn't come downstairs and try to have sex with any of us. I remember thinking at the time that I would do the same for my kids later in life if the situation presented, but now as an adult, I have to admit I would be too afraid of being arrested and vilified over it. I don't think most parents would be as understanding or have the same opinions about it as my mother did, and there are just too many lawsuit happy jerks out there who would see this as a money making opportunity.

I hear you Rhune. But here's the thing. My supervisor Gwen and I have discussed this many times. She is a single parent with two teenagers. Her viewpoint is this: if her daughter wants to have a friend over for the evening and the friend's parents allow her to drink, then she can control 2 girls.

If it is more than one, she puts her foot down. Gwen can't control many teenagers drinking nor be responsible for them all. Should she stand at the door as well handing out condoms? Sex is going to happen.

Underage kids don't need to be drinking in the first place. But I understand it is a fact of life. I would be the one offering them free rides home. There is just no acceptable answer in my opinion.

I'm sorry, but I definitely have a different view. One that has been tempered in real experiences in dealing with minors drinking and the aftermath.

Being the "friendly host" to a son or daughter's friends, allowing alcohol to be brought to that party / consumed / or worse yet, buying it for the kids, is not only criminal, it is just plain stupid. Legally, you expose yourself to criminal and civil law . . . and rightly so!!

I for one (as a parent also) reject the attitude that ANY parent has to resign themselves to the belief that "kids are going to drink anyway". That's bull. That's a cop out! You get involved with your kids, be and STAY a part of their lives, talk TO them instead of AT them, ask their opinion . . . and then really listen to the answer, lead by example and give them good, solid reasons and examples why some behaviors are bad . . . . . . and you'll have a damn good chance that your kid won't cave in to peer pressure to involve themselves in criminal behavior . . . which underage drinking is!
I've seen way too many damn parents who would rather give their child five dollars rather than five minutes.

Early on, I shared with my son, MY experiences in dealing with the results of underaged drinking. I told him of MY pain in having to see the results of kids drinking and driving. . . . of having to go knock on a door in the middle of the night and face wide eyed parents. . . and I told him of the pain and grief I saw in the eyes and actions of parents who had just been told that their child . . . their precious child, was dead. I told MY son, as I tell you now. THAT duty was the one part of my job that I feared above all others. . . Not the guy with a gun, not some coked out thug that wanted to fight . . . but facing a grieving parent. I didn't sugarcoat it either. I showed him the pictures of the results of the results of drinking and driving. I showed him what a athletic young 18 year old looks like after drinking with friends, getting in a car and then having his life snuffed out. And they I asked my son for a promise, . . . I asked him to please, PLEASE, don't put himself in any situation where I or his Mother could wind up being that parent who had to answer that door in the middle of the night.

I know my profession may have been an influence, but there are a whole hellova' lot of OTHER kids whose parents aren't in Law Enforcement, that don't get involved in underaged drinking. It may take extra effort on the part of a parent but I feel that parents OWE it to their kids to make sure that they grow up knowing and following rules . . . . society's rules, society's laws. Once they turn 18 (or 21 regarding alcohol). They are free to make their own decisions.

I think, too, the difference when I was in highschool, legal drinking age was 18. Most of us were 18 by our senior year so drinking was illegal. My daughter is 20, and her friends who are over 21 can drink at our house. She can drink at our house. But if they are under 21, I don't serve them anything and they aren't allowed to drink while they're here.

to me, the red flags came up at the point she was referring to herself (or wanted to be) as cool and one of the crowd...

in this situation, it seems one has to pick the lesser of two evils...

its important to communicate with your child (and parent) as bumper and others have demonstrated... that ultimately leads to trust regardless of the choice being made...

ie... not to drink
ie... not drive if away from the house..
ie... call parents to come and get them...

the sex part is really messed up, get this woman some help...

well.. I'll go with Bumper... I am not yet a parent but then I do think that it's the parents responsibility to gear their kids to the right direction, good communication to their kids and letting them know the possible consequences they'd face for each action...

also, if a parent allows his/her kids to undergo underage drinking, they not only let them face the danger of these vices but also they are allowing their kids to exploit their bodies at an early age... allowing them to drink early could pose early problems to their livers, smoking to their lungs, etc...

but then if they are in the proper age, I would prefer my kids to party at home instead of some bar... here in the Philippines, kids usually separate from the parents only when they get married.. though sometimes children remain with their parents even after marriage....

Children/Teenagers WANT their parents to say NO.

One has to establish a parent/child relationship and be respected.
Some parents want to be a "buddy", this usually ends in a bad result in one way or another.
A parent can be "cool" in many other ways than having a sex party for their child, which was more for herself!
This woman can get her sex other ways, other places. In my opinion she is mentally sick, plus perverted.

Hopefully, counseling will be mandatory for her!

Just to make sure I was clear on this above, I don't condone or approve of this woman having sex with boys. I don't approve of her throwing parties just to get teenage boys drunk so she could have sex with them, or anything along those lines. Earlier I was specifically addressing the idea of parents that host a party or allow their own child to drink based on my own experiences.
