Top 20 Most Popular Baby Names
For just the second time in a decade, the most popular names for baby boys are not Biblical. They're Celtic.

Move over Michael, Matthew, Andrew, and Jacob and make room for Aiden, Dylan, Connor, and Logan. "In the past 5 years or so, we've noticed this Celtic influence in the girls' lists, and now it's crossing over to the boys'," said Jennifer Moss, creator and co-owner of BabyNames.com.

Meanwhile, Madison has hung on for yet another year--it's now 5 and counting--as the top name for girls, which as near as anyone can figure comes from the 1984 movie "Splash," starring Daryl Hannah in the role of a mermaid named Madison. Why is it so popular? "I think it's because Madison is a strong, yet feminine name. It conjures up visions of both a Madison Avenue powerbroker and an innocent, beautiful cinematic mermaid--what an incredible combination of traits," said Moss.

BabyNames.com compiles this annual ranking of the top 20 most popular baby names using the favorite name lists created on the Web site by more than 100,000 expectant parents.

My husband and I have largely ignored baby name lists, we have our own theme we've been going with.  I'm irish and he's scottish and so we've been sticking to traditional celtic names.

the only time I looked at a list was when I had already chosen my daughter's name.  I then went to look at the most popular names list for the previous year.  Her name, that we had chosen, was number 1.

We then reversed her names so that the most popular name became her middle name and her middle name became her first name.

ohh...  I don't think I would want my future to kid to have a popular name... I wouldn't like him to experience what I had... I was never the single Paul in my class... hehehe...  at least now in the office I am... and I have a lot of Paul friends...

I thought 'John Paul' is a bit original. Nope. And be prepared to be stereotyped, if you know what I mean.  Wink
