Don't Touch THIS in Hotel Rooms

Don't Touch THIS in Hotel Rooms
If you see a stray hair in the hotel bathroom sink, you may be so repulsed you call the front desk for a new room. Guess what? That's nothing compared to the TV remote control, which you probably grabbed just after you put down your suitcase.

Think about it: Almost every guest in that room has touched it, the maid doesn't clean it, and the dirt and bacteria are invisible. Bet you never thought about that before.

University of Arizona microbiology professor Chuck Gerba conducted a study of a dozen Tucson hotels. As the Arizona Republic put it, TV remotes hold more than batteries. "One of the dirtiest places in the room people don't expect is the TV channel changer, believe it or not," Gerba told the Republic. He has even found fecal bacteria on those remote controls.

Hotels know the room must be clean--very, very clean--to keep your business. In fact, safety and cleanliness are hotel guests' top two priorities. But the reality is that not all hotels are clean.

Yes, you do get what you pay for. Microbiology professor Gerba said his research of those 12 Tucson hotels showed there is a "statistically significant" relationship between a room's price and its bacteria levels. The higher the cost of the room, the fewer the bacteria. In addition to the remote control, Gerba's team found fecal bacteria on toilet tank lids, sinks, and taps--all of which are places where moisture acts as a reservoir for bacteria.

What's a traveler to do? Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use alcohol gel to clean your hands after you touch items that are prone to bacteria. "That's probably one of the best defenses you can use," Gerba told the Arizona Republic. "Just remember, every place you're touching, someone else did it before you."

And if the hotel room doesn't look or smell clean, it isn't. Complain!

OH MY GOODNESS!  Shocked  I'd have never thought about that and, yes, I've stayed in hotels where I've found "personal" hair on the supposedly clean bathtowels.  :barf:

I wonder if a remote will work through a Ziplock bag?  I guess we could travel with cellophane to cover the keys of the remote.  I mean, I'm just paranoid enough about these things to do something like that.  I always take my own pillow with me wherever I go.  I HATE the thought of sleeping on a pillow that someone else has drooled on!  I mean, you can wash the pillowcase but not the pillow.  Know what I mean?

I am *not* someone who is traditionally neat or a clean freak by nature, but I am more paranoid about germs when I am pregnant.  Getting sick when you are pregnant can have devastating results, so I tend to be a little OCD (obsessive-compulsive) when pregnant.  At my office we have several shared machines we have to use and I have not gotten sick one time from them, because I keep those little individually wrapped squares that are soaked in rubbing alcohol.  They aren't wet enough to drip down into the machines and ruin anything, but they are wet enough to wipe the surface and kill any germs there.  So rather than trying to use a remote in a plastic bag, I would recommend getting some of those swabs from any drugstore or mart and taking those with.  I didn't do that with my first pregnancy and I ended up getting 3 colds that lasted nearly the duration of my pregnancy.  I think I had about 1 month where I wasn't sick.  This time, not a single cold, and my coworkers have been sick several times.

The REMOTE is the first thing a person wil touch, also the phone is nasty!
Get the bedspread off first thing, also do NOT walk on the carpet barefoot.

I read this last year and also listened to the Travel guy tell us, makes one consider staying home, doesn't it?

TAKE ANTI-BACTERIAL wipes with you when you travel, or leave them in your cosmetic case so they are ready for the next time.  They won't take up much room!

If you pee on your feet in the shower you don't have to worry so much about the barefoot thing.  Grin   The ammonia in human urine kills just about everything, including athletes foot germs.

Well, you have to dry off and get out, and I sure don't want my feet to smell like I've pee'd on them Lips Sealed :laff:
This IS funny even though it's true!

Ya'll are too funny.  Last time I was in a hotel room, it was in Savannah with QT.  We walked around barefoot, drooled on the pillows,  wallowed in our bedspreads, talked on the phone and YES, used the remote.

I guess I just don't think about germs.  I can pick up just as many germs at work or out in public just touching a doorknob or turning on a faucet, etc.

That is, IF you touch the doorknob.  When we are out and I go to the ladie's room, count on it, I DO NOT touch the door with my bare hands after I've washed them Roll Eyes

Me either, that's cause there are too many women who touch the handle with their bare hands after NOT washing their hands.  I read somewhere once that 70% of women will not wash hands after going to the bathroom in public unless someone else is in the restroom too.
