Emmitt Smith To Retire From NFL
« on: Feb 3rd, 2005, 2:25pm »

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - NFL career rushing leader Emmitt Smith is retiring after 15 years, two sources within the NFL said.

Smith, who starred for the Dallas Cowboys for 13 seasons and spent the last two years with Arizona, will make the announcement in the afternoon at the site of the Super Bowl, according to the sources, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

He is expected to sign a ONE-day contract with DALLAS so he can retire as a COWBOY.  Dallas owner Jerry Jones will be at the ceremony.

The 35-year-old Smith ran for 18,355 yards and 164 touchdowns in his career, both NFL records. He rushed for 937 yards and nine touchdowns for the Cardinals this season.

He was more consistent than he was spectacular, a running back who could be relied on to get tough yards when tough yards were needed.

He rushed for 1,000 yards or more every year between 1991 and 2001. He led the NFL in rushing in 1991, 1992 and 1995 and in touchdowns in three different seasons.

But despite his impressive statistics, he won just two major awards in 15 seasons _ NFL MVP in 1993 and the Super Bowl MVP that same season, when he rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns in the Cowboys' 30-13 win over Buffalo in Atlanta.

He won those despite missing the first two games of that season in a contract dispute with Jones. Smith finished that regular season with perhaps his greatest game, an overtime win over the New York Giants at the Meadowlands.

The Cowboys and Giants were both 11-4. The winner got the NFC East title, home-field advantage in the playoffs and a first-round bye. The loser got a wild-card game the following week.

Smith separated his shoulder in the third quarter but returned to the game, which went into overtime tied at 13. He carried the ball on nine of the Cowboys' 11 plays in the extra period at one point raising his aching shoulder to stiff-arm Lawrence Taylor on his final run, which set up Eddie Murray's game-winning field goal.

He finished with 229 total yards and a touchdown on 32 carries and 10 receptions, the heaviest workload in team history, then spent the night in a hospital.

Had the Cowboys lost that game, Smith probably wouldn't have been able to play the following week in a wild-card game. That would have made the road much more difficult in what turned out to be the Cowboys' second of three Super Bowl victories in four seasons.

He's "retiring" from the Cardinals but accepting a 1 year "honorary" position with the cowboys. I believe this is so he can go to the Hall of Fame in a Cowboys jersey. So why are they calling it retirement?

End zone: Emmitt calls it a career

12:49 AM CST on Friday, February 4, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Emmitt Smith still wants to play football. But he's not willing to play the game he loves at any cost.

So when Arizona recently declined to offer Smith a new contract, he decided it was time to end his 15-year career.

Smith, 35, made his formal announcement Thursday afternoon at the Prime Osborn Convention Center

"I gave the Cardinals the first opportunity to re-sign me and the Cardinals chose not to ... that made my decision a whole lot easier," Smith said. "I didn't see myself going other places.
"I didn't have a desire to move my family to another location. I wanted to finish in Arizona. I didn't want to bounce my way around the league looking for a home."

Smith finishes his career as the NFL's all-time leading rusher with 18,355 yards and 164 touchdowns.

Smith, who played in eight Pro Bowls, won four rushing titles, three Super Bowl rings and the 1993 league MVP award. He had a NFL-record 78 100-yard games and gained more than 1,000 yards in 11 consecutive seasons, from 1990 through 2001.

When his contract expires on March 1, Smith will sign a ceremonial one-year deal with the Cowboys. A few days later, he will be placed on the reserve/retired list.

"What's so wonderful about Emmitt and so inspiring about his career," said owner Jerry Jones, "is that he had a goal and a plan and he worked hard to take advantage of every opportunity that he received."

Now, Smith said he's ready to become a full-time businessman and spend more time with his wife, Pat, and their four children. Jones said Smith could join the Cowboys in some front-office capacity.

Smith said he hopes to be like Roger Staubach and Magic Johnson, who have had success in the business world following their playing careers.

He'd also like to work in the media, like former teammates Troy Aikman and Daryl Johnston, who have made successful transitions as broadcasters.

Smith denied Internet reports that he was part of an Arizona group led by businessman Reggie Fowler to buy the Minnesota Vikings.

"That's absolutely not true," he said. "That's not the case. I have not talked to anybody from that group at all."

Smith joined Arizona in 2003, when the Cowboys released him. He gained only 256 yards in 2003, when Cowboys safety Roy Williams fractured his shoulder and forced him to miss six games.

Last season, he gained 937 yards and scored nine touchdowns for the 6-10 Cardinals.

"I have no regrets about my two years in Arizona," Smith said. "The Cardinals gave me a chance to extend my career and a chance to play."

And an opportunity to make the all-time rushing record one of the most difficult records in sports to break.

Jim Brown held the record for 20 years and Walter Payton kept it for 18. One day, Smith said, someone will break his record.

"It's a special record because it takes durability, grace, desire, determination and a short-term memory to get that far up there," Smith said. "It's a record I've always wanted from the first time I got here.

"I didn't want to be one- or two-year wonder. I wanted to be very consistent over a long time because I knew I'd have a shot at the record if I did that."

This last article was in the newspaper this morning.  No big deal, is it?
Another good guy retired and we shall miss him.  We know Emmitt will do great things outside of wearing a uniform.  He is greatly admired and respected.

His secretary came into the store where I worked part-time a couple of years ago and purchased greenery toppers for Emmitts office.  She was such a nice lady and told us how much she enjoyed working for him.  We all thought she must be related, she says folks think that constantly.  I told her to tell Emmitt how much we think of him and how he conducts his life and what an inspiration he is to young boys.  She told me she hears that everywhere she goes.
What a legacy he leaves behind!
