Girl locked in Room for over a Year

TUCSON, Arizona (AP) -- A man and his girlfriend were arrested for allegedly locking his 14-year-old daughter in a bedroom for more than a year, police said Wednesday.

The couple allegedly allowed the girl out of the room only for bathroom breaks and meager meals starting in November 2003, said Sgt. Kerry Fuller, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.

Detectives also found that the father sexually abused the girl for several years, Fuller said. The Associated Press is not naming the adults to protect the teen's identity.

The girl escaped Thursday from the home and called authorities, Fuller said.

Investigators determined that the girl -- described as 5 feet 6, weighing only 97 pounds and "significantly malnourished" -- was kept in a bedroom with its single window covered by a blanket, its door fastened by an outside lock.

Two daughters of the woman -- ages 8 and 10 -- also lived in the house but there were no indications they were abused, police said.

The couple was booked Tuesday into the Pima County Jail. The man, 35, was charged with child abuse, two counts of child molestation and six counts of sexual contact with a minor. The woman, 32, was charged with one count of child abuse.

Fuller said the girl may not have attended school since fourth grade.

All three girls were placed in the custody of Child Protective Services

This kind of story makes me sick to my stomach.  Put these two under the jail and throw away the key!  There is NOT a punishment that would be enough!

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- More details are surfacing over a Tucson couple who allegedly kept a teenager locked up in her bedroom for over a year.

The Arizona Daily Star the girl's father physically and sexually abused his 14-year-old daughter and was investigated by Child Protective Services at least five times in the past six years.

A C-P-S spokeswoman says the only information C-P-S can provide regarding the child is that she is safe.

Tucson police arrested the 35-year-old father and his 32-year-old girlfriend after the teen escaped. Both are jailed, charged with abuse.

C-P-S says they're continuing to determine the girl's needs and will provide whatever treatment or services are necessary to help her "through this terrible ordeal."

This poor child is scarred for life.  May God judge that couple according to their actions.  No punishment we could dish out here on earth could equal the crime...although, you know me.  I'm all for castration.

That's right, after this much abuse, no amount of therapy and or treatment will ever make her "normal" or mentally healthy.  The sad truth is people who go through an ordeal like this don't usually make it out intact.  At least she will be getting some treatement and help now.  Maybe with enough work and the right placement she'll at least get to a place where she's "ok" and can be happy.

It's just so heartbreaking.

It reminds me of Genie, the girl who was locked up for 13 years and tied to a chair in her room.

It is just so sad and unbelievable that someone could be that cruel.

The step daughter of a friend of mine was pretty much tortured by her biological mom before they finally tracked her down and got custody (she had been hiding out with the baby).  By the age of 3, she was kept naked in a playpen turned upside-down with a weight on top (basically a cage) for up to 11 hours a day in the middle of the living room.  It's amazing in a disgusting I don't understand it at all kind of way, what some people are capable of doing to another human being.

One thing I've always wondered about these type things - why do they pick the one kid, and the others are left alone?  There was a child here in TX same thing, parents kept her locked in a closet a few years back, but the others went to school and were treated "normally".  About that same time I was reunited with a friend I'd lost contact with, and we were discussing this "picking on one" thing, and she told me that she'd been abused the whole time we were children by her uncle and grandparents - locked in her room, molested, beaten, etc... and that none of her three sisters had been treated that way, just her.  Said she had no idea why, unless it was because they were angry at her mother for leaving the girls with them, and she looked like her mother...

Also, after talking with her, made me wonder how many more of my friends had been in bad situations and I never knew... no one talked about these things 30 years ago... all that time she and I were friends, went to the same church, and she even spent the night at my house a few times (course it never dawned on me she never invited me to HER house), and I never knew anything was going on... Sad

I always wonder how many hundreds of children are being abused in similiar circumstances for every one that is discovered.
This is a big country, and this seems to be done more often tha we think about.  Even one case in every city is probably a conservative estimate!  Mind boggling!

If I read correctly, in this case, the picked on girl had a different mother than the other children, and that's why she was singled out.  A lot of times when one child is singled out it's for some little thing they can't help, like their look or their voice, etc.
