(4TH UPDATE) VALENTINE'S Day turned bloody after almost simultaneous explosions rocked the cities of Makati, Davao, and General Santos, leaving at least seven people dead and scores injured, according to reports culled by INQ7.net.
The Abu Sayyaf has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which they said was done to protest the government's “atrocities” against Muslims, including the ongoing offensives against a breakaway faction of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in Mindanao.

“Our latest operation in GenSan, Davao, and Manila, planned and executed with precision by the gallant warriors of Islam is our continuing response to the government's atrocities committed against Muslims everywhere,” Abu Solaiman,  the group's spokesman, said.

“This is our Valentine's gift to the President,” he said in an interview over GMA Network's dzBB radio.

GMA Network quoted Metro Manila police chief Director Avelino Razon Jr. as saying that the Abu Sayyaf may just be taking advantage of the explosions and that their participation still had to be confirmed.

In Makati City, at least three people were killed while at least 20 others were injured after an explosion rocked a bus plying EDSA as it passed underneath the Metro Rail Transit's Ayala Station, Razon said.

“Our EOD [explosives and ordnance division] and SOCO [scene of the crime operation] are clearing the area,” Razon said.

The bus explosion occurred only a few meters from the Hotel Inter-Continental in Makati.

The explosion left a scene of devastation of in the country's financial district.

“Checkpoints have been set up to ensure security in Metro Manila is in place,” Razon said.

Police and military went their highest alert levels after the blasts.

In General Santos, three people were killed while over a dozen others were injured after a bomb went off inside a tricycle parked outside the Gaisano Mall at around 7 p.m., Senior Superintendent Willy Nangane, city police chief said.

One of the fatalities died on the spot while two others were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, he said.

At least one person was killed when a second blast hit the Ecoland bus depot in Davao city at dusk, Inquirer News Service reported.

Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Soliman said on dzBB that five people were injured in that attack, clarifying an earlier statement where she said the five had been killed.

Military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Buenaventura Pascual said improvised bombs exploded in Davao and General Santos.

The Abu Sayyaf is an alleged cell of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda terrorist network.

Fighting between the government and loyalists of former Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) has been raging since last week, leaving over 70 people dead.

THE MANGLED and burnt bodies of three passengers lay uncollected and smouldering in the Philippines' smart financial district of Makati on Monday in the the wake of a Valentine's Day bomb attack blamed on Muslim militants.
Grey smoke and the smell of explosives hung thick in the humid air, as wailing police and rescue trucks struggled to get through a huge crowd of shoppers scrambling to escape after a bomb ripped through a packed bus.

Red roses mixed with thousands of shattered glass fragments were scattered on the ground and the bus was reduced to a heap of twisted metal. Two other buses waiting for passengers on the kerb were burnt.

"There was a huge explosion, people were caught unawares. There was screaming everywhere," said off-duty soldier Ding Siugan, after picking up a woman with blood oozing from her forehead and leaving her some distance away.

Ordnance experts with bomb-sniffing dogs and Special Action Force policemen armed with automatic rifles marched in column to seal off the area.

The body of one passenger lay untouched on a stretcher some meters away, while two mangled bodies hung on a rectangular metal awning.

A stream of ambulances carried up to 60 bloodied passengers, including women and children, to various hospitals around the capital.

National police chief Edgardo Aglipay ordered the entire police force on heightened alert and sent men to guard vital installations.

Rescuers were sifting through the rubble to check for possible explosives left undiscovered.

"Get away from the vehicle! Get away from there!" yelled one exasperated police officer as he tried to control a crowd of curious onlookers.

Nearby, a vendor vainly offered to sell a bunch of roses for a cut-price 20 pesos (36 US cents) to panicking couples streaming from a nearby mall.

Shops pulled down shutters and additional private security guards with shotguns were deployed around the nearby Inter-Continental Hotel and the Ayala malls.

The blast in Makati came barely two hours after a bomb ripped through a tricycle just outside the Gaisano mall in the southern city of General Santos, killing three and wounding 33.

Another explosive device ripped through a bus terminal in Davao city in the south, killing at least one person.

Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye described the bombings as "despicable acts" and warned the nation to "brace itself against these attacks on our freedom and security."

The Al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf claimed responsibility for the attacks, calling them a "continuing response to the Philippine government's atrocities committed against Muslims everywhere."

I know Pau works in Makati so I hope he's ok. My brother also works in Makati, but I think he was still in the office when the bombing occured at around 7:00 pm I think.

yeah... I heard of this news when I was in the gym last night.... this is disheartening... with all the deaths... and now we have the "Valentine's Day Bombing".... these terrorist target occasions in their attacks..

I hope these terrorists be put to jail or be stopped... but sadly... these terrorists pass their "cause" (if there is still) to their kids... Sad
