Police find Amber Alert mom's SUV
Monday, February 21, 2005 Posted: 3:46 PM EST (2046 GMT)

DENTON, Texas (AP) -- An SUV belonging to a missing pregnant woman was found in a creek Monday as police searched for her and her 7-year-old son, two days after a pool of blood was found in their home.

A statewide Amber Alert was issued for Lisa Underwood and her son, Jayden, after she failed to show up for her baby shower Saturday, and the alert was expanded to New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Her vehicle was found nose down and partially submerged in a creek in an undeveloped area of Denton, about 30 miles northeast of Fort Worth. Police used dogs to try to pick up their trail.

Police would not give details of what they found at Underwood's Fort Worth home, but a police report said relatives checking her house Saturday found a large pool of blood on the living room floor.

"What really causes us to be concerned for their safety is the evidence located inside the home," Lt. Gene Jones said.

"We haven't made any conclusive determinations about what happened, but there is a great concern for her safety as well as her son."

Underwood is not married, Jones said. He said her son's father was among those being contacted by police.

Underwood is a co-owner of Boopa's Bagel Deli with Holly Pils, who said she last spoke with Underwood on Friday night.

"There's no one I know of that might want to do her harm," Pils said.

Police: Texas man says he suffocated pregnant woman, son
Tuesday, February 22, 2005 Posted: 6:18 PM EST (2318 GMT)

DALLAS, Texas (CNN) -- A Texas man arrested for the slayings of a pregnant woman and her 7-year-old son told police he suffocated Lisa and Jayden Underwood in their home, police said Tuesday.

Stephen Dale Barbee, 37, was arrested early Tuesday in Tyler, east of Dallas, and then transferred to Fort Worth, said Lt. Gene Jones, a Fort Worth police spokesman.

Jones later confirmed to reporters that Barbee confessed to the killings and led police to a makeshift, shallow grave where two bodies were found.

Jones said that the bodies could not yet be positively identified, but that their ages were consistent with those of Lisa Underwood, 34, and her son.

Barbee will be charged with capital murder, Fort Worth police said.

A court affidavit filed by police provided details of the crime, including the confessed suffocation.

The bodies were found in water in a wooded area south of Denton, about 30 miles north of Fort Worth, police said earlier.

The woman's blue Dodge Durango was found in a creek Monday in Denton.

Underwood, who was seven months pregnant, and her son were reported missing Saturday after she failed to appear at her baby shower.

Bond for the suspect was set at $2 million, a Smith County detention officer said.

Barbee and Underwood, both of Fort Worth, were romantically involved at "one time," Jones said.

A search of Underwood's home Saturday evening found "a significant amount of blood," but no signs of forced entry, Jones said.

Police on Monday searched a house near Underwood's home in northern Fort Worth, he said. Several neighbors said that Barbee lived at this house with another woman and her children.

An Amber Alert, issued by police over the weekend, was canceled Tuesday morning after Barbee's arrest, said a spokesman with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

CNN's Ed Lavandera and Tracy Sabo contributed to this report.

I'm sure we'll soon have all the details of this hateful crime, but how come there is a significant amount of blood at the home if they were suffocated?

Well, considering it says they weren't able to identify the bodies in the stream right off the bat, I'm guessing he cut them into pieces he could carry out without getting noticed.

This story geets worse with each piece of news, so sad. This is the latest update Cry

Affidavit: Business partner saw bodies

06:35 AM CST on Wednesday, February 23, 2005

Before Steven Barbee confessed to murdering Lisa and Jayden Underwood, at least one witness told investigators he saw the two bodies and was told about how the deaths occurred.

An affidavit identifies the witness as Ron Dodd, Barbee's business partner. Dodd lives in a North Tarrant County home with Barbee's ex-wife, Theresa.

Bodies of mother, son found in field
In the arrest warrant, Barbee told police Dodd dropped him off at the home of Lisa Underwood on Friday. Barbee told police the pair "began to argue because he would not leave his wife" Patricia.

Barbee said Underwood then kicked him in his leg, and in response he "punched her in the face several times, causing her nose to bleed."

According to the affidavit, during the fight Barbee held Underwood on the floor "where she was suffocated and died."

Underwood's seven-year-old son entered the living room screaming, at which point Barbee told police he "placed his hand over the child's mouth and nose and suffocated him to death."

Stephen Barbee Barbee then said he drove Underwood's Dodge Durango SUV to a deserted road in Denton County, and called Dodd to the location when he ran out of gas. That's when Dodd told investigators he "observed the bodies of a female and male child in the back," and he left the scene shaken.

Barbee admitted in the affidavit to dumping the bodies in a shallow grave.

Dodd then stated he went back to Denton County to pick up his business partner, and Barbee allegedly "told him that he had killed the woman and her child."

Barbee, 37, grew up in Azle at a home where his parents still live. Neighbors remember him as a "good kid."

"He's just a normal everyday kid," said former neighbor Joyce Admire.

Stanley Statch was one of his friends at Azle High School.

"We'd hang out here and shoot baskets and stuff," Statch said. "He was always nice."

Lisa Underwood and her son, Jayden Years later, Barbee started a concrete business with his now ex-wife Theresa called Cowboy Coring, and lived in the North Tarrant County where Ron Dodd now lives.

Former neighbors there who did not want to be identified recall a meaner side to Barbee.

"I guess the way I would classify him is that someone who was angry and essentially considered himself above the rules - that they didn't pertain to him," the neighbor said.

Barbee eventually moved away from that area after divorcing his wife, and moved into a home with Patricia Reinhardt in Fort Worth. Neighbors there were too stunned to talk on camera.

Regardless of their overall feelings, everyone News 8 spoke to from Barbee's past and present share one thing in common: disbelief over the allegations that he killed his pregnant ex-girlfriend Underwood and her seven-year-old son.

Said one neighbor, "It's just hard to believe what some people will do."

Apparently the blood came from someone being hit in the nose.  First reports said she kick him and he hit her in the nose.  Since then I've heard reports say she did both, kicked him and punched him, and that the blood in the house was his.

There has been a second arrest, his business partner, Dodd,  who knew all along what happened.  He drove him to the house and left him there.  Reports say Barbee used the woman's SUV to transport the bodies, ran out of gas, buried them, then called the business partner to come back and get him.  That's when the business partner supposedly saw the bodies, and the first he knew of the murder... yet he didn't bother to report it... not sure what he's been charged with, just heard it on local news the other day.
