Peterson Judge Sentences Him to Death

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) - A judge formally sentenced Scott Peterson to death Wednesday after family members got into a shouting match and Laci Peterson's mother sobbed as she called her son-in-law "an evil murderer."

Judge Alfred A. Delucchi allowed only Laci's family members to speak at the hearing after indicating he believed the death penalty was warranted.

Peterson's father yelled from the audience as Laci's brother, Brent Rocha, spoke to the court, saying "Laci and Conner are the true victims here."

"What a liar!" Lee Peterson said before the judge admonished him and he walked out of the courtroom. Jackie Peterson, Scott Peterson's mother, also interrupted Rocha but her voice was inaudible.

Scott Peterson, 32, was invited to make a statement. After several minutes of discussion with his attorneys, he declined.

Delucchi denied a defense request for a new trial before upholding the jury's recommendation that Peterson be sentenced to death.

"The court is satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant, Scott Lee Peterson, is guilty of first-degree murder" and second degree, Delucchi said, adding that he found the killings "were cruel, uncaring, heartless and callous."

Peterson, shackled at the waist and wearing a dark suit, showed no emotion throughout the hearing.

Peterson will probably be sent to death row at San Quentin State Prison within 48 hours, said San Mateo County Sheriff's Lt. Lisa Williams. The infamous lockup overlooks the same bay where Laci Peterson's body was discarded.

Laci's mother, Sharon Rocha, sobbed and trembled from a podium as she lashed out at her former son-in-law. Scott Peterson stared back at her without emotion.

"You decided to throw Laci and Conner away, dispose of them like they were just a piece of garbage," she said. "You were wrong; dead wrong."

Dabbing at her eyes with tissues, she called him "an evil murderer."

"The fact that you no longer wanted Laci did not give you the right to murder her," Sharon Rocha said. "She was my daughter ... I trusted you, and you betrayed me ... You betrayed everybody."

Peterson was convicted in November of first-degree murder in the killing of Laci and second-degree murder for the slaying of her fetus. A jury recommended the death penalty a month later.

Rocha spoke to Scott Peterson directly.

"I would hope that you regret the choices that you made. Maybe you don't," Rocha said. "Did you really hate Laci and Conner that much or did you just dislike yourself?"

Peterson's attorney, Mark Geragos, tried to get the judge to allow Peterson's parents, Jackie and Lee Peterson, to speak, on the basis that they were related to Conner.

But the judge said the hearing was an opportunity for Laci's relatives to speak only. He ordered Scott Peterson to pay $10,000 restitution for funeral expenses and an additional $5,000, though the reason for that amount was unexplained.

It might be heartless to say but I wish they could bypass the usual 7-10 years it takes prior to carrying out his sentence.

I don't know how i feel about this.  This guy is a major creepizoid. I mean how psycho do you have to be to kill your wife and child and then call your mistress and act like everything is ok?  But in this case I think death is too good for him.  He should be forced to sit in a room by himself and stare at nothing but pictures of laci and her family for the rest of his natural life.

I'm not sure death is always a punishment Sad

Maybe not, for I still find my emotions are misxed about the death pentalty.
Why should the state have to keep him fed, clothed and warm for years.

I say get this monster out of society and the expense he has already caused
the taxpayers of Califfornia and good ridance.

With a death penalty comes an automatice appeal, so this could go on for years more before he takes his final breath.

My heart goes out to Laci's family.  How can any of us begin to imagine the hurt her family/Mother are going through.  Her Mother is so grieved, hurt and missing her daughter, it would not surprize me if she doesn't have a heart attack or stroke.

Not to forget Scott's parents, for they are also victims.  We don't bring our
babies into the world for them to grow up and be heartless murderers.

Rhune, would you call him a sociopath, besides all the other names we call him?

Absolutely.  From the details that were leaked early in the case, the fetus was found, with the cord still attached, duct tape wrapped around it's neck and a cut across it's chest.  They believe the baby was delivered after the mother was killed.  We're not talking a crime of passion here that was over quickly.  We're talking slow and cruel, and just disgusting beyond what there are words for...

I guess there's the difference between Peterson and Robert Blake for me...Peterson is a socialpath and Blake was just an idiot who somehow convinced himself this was the only option he had left of getting rid of her.  They both committed murder (in my opinion) but with entirely different motives and emotions...there's just a big difference.  Neither one is ok with me, but I don't have a real problem with Blake being released whereas I'd have a huge problem with Peterson being released.

I dont believe in the death penalty, this wasnt justice for me.  I feel he should rot in jail and think about what he has done what he will never have again "freedom".

I disagree, for a couple of reasons.  I'm just not interested in feeding this man for the next however many years he lives, but more importantly, I don't think he will think about what he's done.  A sociopath has no sense of remorse or guilt, they don't feel shame or horror over what they have done.  He would simply sit around and bitch about how unfairly he's been treated and how he got the shaft.

Rhune, over at CNN.com there is an article, it doesn't look like the sentence much matters.  there are over 600 people ahead of Peterson on death row.  The article said you are more likely to die of old age on death row than to be executed (something about not enough lawyers for appeals)

So it looks like we ill be feeding him for the rest of his life anyway. I just think he needs to suffer a little more while he's here.  He won't be executed anytime soon, if at all.  Meanwhile, he gets a private cell with a TV.

Maybe justice would be better served if they placed him into the general population. It's my understanding that the convicts don't tolerate baby killers any more than the rest of us, they just deal with the offenders on a more permanent basis.

I feel that the death penalty is the easy way out.  A sociopath doesnt care you are right and I believe that they then dont care if they live or die, well I want them to live .  It makes me sick that we are told time and time again not to take the law into our own hands then they allow death apon someone eles.  I also belive that Peterson is guilty however the case was all circumstntal.  THere have been many Canadian's and American's that have been sentenced to jail and have later been found inneccent( Im sure some ppl have been sentenced to death and were actually inncennt.  Like I said earlier I feel the death penalty is the easy way out.

I am agaisnt the death penality and it is not just becuse it is a more sever punishment to rot in jail for the rest of there life, but also in light of the fact that so many ppl on death row have been exonerated through D/A in recent history that one can never be absolutely certian that we are killing the right person eveytime.  In addtion we contradict ourselfs when we say that it is wrong to kill yet we justify killing the killers.
