Jury acquits Robert Blake of killing his wife
Wednesday, March 16, 2005 Posted: 5:53 PM EST (2253 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A jury acquitted tough-guy actor Robert Blake of murder Wednesday in the shooting death of his wife four years ago, a stunning verdict in a case that played out like pulp fiction.

The verdict came after eight days of deliberations by the jury.

The 71-year-old star of the 1970s detective drama "Baretta" was charged with one count of murder and two counts of solicitation of murder. Court officials said the jury was deadlocked on one of the solicitation counts..

Prosecutors claimed Blake shot Bonny Lee Bakley, 44, in a car outside a restaurant in May 2001 after failing to persuade two ex-stuntmen to kill her.

The verdicts came several hours after jurors reviewed testimony from an author who said police provided him with details of an interview with one of the former stuntmen, Ronald "Duffy" Hambleton.

Miles Corwin wrote the book "Homicide Special: A Year with the LAPD's Elite Detective Unit" in which he included details of the Blake investigation and other cases.

Corwin testified Hambleton told police that Blake had approached him to work on a script and had said nothing about wanting to have his wife killed.

Hambleton denied knowing anything about a plot to kill Bakley until six months after the crime, but then gave a detailed account of Blake allegedly scouting locations for the murder.

Hambleton's testimony was crucial to the prosecution because there is no DNA or other physical evidence linking Blake to the crime.

Defense attorney M. Gerald Schwartzbach suggested Hambleton made up the story while either delusional from drugs or to win favor with authorities as he faced an unrelated misdemeanor firearms charge.

OJ is still convinced the real killer is hiding out on the golf course

I didn't follow this one too closely, but from what i heard it seemed pretty obvious he was guilty, was that just media hyping?  From what you said Rhune it seems it was.

It's a shame that a famous face allows you to get away with murder if it is.

He seemed pretty guilty to me, not that she wasn't pretty much a vampiric scumbag, but that doesn't make it ok for him to kill her.  Now the one thing I seem to recall hearing and reading several times was that despite everything else he was/is a very good and loving father to his baby with this woman.  I remember commenting to my husband that this poor kid was going to grow up now without the father that really cared for her just because he couldn't find a better way of getting rid of this human leech.  So, while I think he was guilty of what happened, I guess I'm also glad this little girl will get her father back, who was pretty much her sole care-giver, and from what I could tell, really loves her.

Wow, i really didn't know the story.  Was she spending all his money?  I didn't hear any of that about her.  Like you said, not that that makes it ok, but circumstances do play a large part in how we view life.

My understanding was that she made it a career of stalking celebrities and had elaborate plans of getting pregnant and blackmailing various stars.  They found tons of evidence in her suite, which was separate from the main house where Blake lived and raised the baby.  The police founds tons of records and other evidence of all she had done and dirt she had dug up on various celebrities she was in the process of trying to blackmail, etc.  She was someone I would call a sociopath.  Mind you a sociopath is not necessarily someone who kills or physically beats another person, but is somone who has no capacity for remorse or love in them.  They are usually quite charismatic and are great at manipulating.  I'm sure Robert was an easy target for her, his having grown up in a home where he was beaten and had terrible low self-esteem.  Again, it does not make his killing her right, but I believe he did it out of desperation to get out of his situation rather than some kind of internal cruelty.  There were other choices he could have made instead.

I've read the same things, Rhune.  He also didn't want the baby with her and wanted his daughter, who can't have children to raise this baby.  She now lives with his daughter and SIL.  I believe they have custody of her.  She might be 3  or  4 yrs now.  Time does fly!

I'm soooooo glad this trial is over so that the press won't have to divide their resources any longer and can now focus on what's REALLY important .
