From The Cord Blood Registry:

The ever-increasing potential of stem cell therapy continues to make headlines across the world. In South Korea, a team of scientists used newborn stem cells to treat long-term paralysis in a patient. The scientists anticipated that the stem cells would trigger the growth of new nerve cells to replace those that were damaged due to the patient's accident. They claimed success when, for the first time after nearly twenty years of being confined to a wheel chair, Hwang Mi-Soon, 37 was able to stand up and take a few steps again.

CBR Transplant #35: Aplastic Anemia
In December, three-year old Titus Chang underwent a newborn stem cell transplant to treat his lifelong battle with Aplastic Anemia. When standard medical therapy was no longer effective, doctors at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA used Titus' brother's newborn stem cells to treat the blood disorder. These stem cells helped facilitate his bone marrow to produce the blood cells necessary for his body.

CBR Transplant #36: Brain Injury
Stem cell therapy gave a CBR client family hope for their baby who suffered Anoxic Brain Injury (lack of oxygen in the brain during birth). Doctors are hopeful that these stem cells will stimulate the growth of new brain cells to replace the damaged ones. Although this treatment is still in the early stages, doctors are optimistic that stem cell therapy will soon be used to treat many types of brain injuries and degenerative brain disorders.

Stem Cells Repair Hearts
Stem cells from human umbilical cord blood injected into rats' hearts immediately after a heart attack greatly reduced the size of heart damage and restored pumping function to near normal. If animal studies continue to show success, the researchers predict that stem cells from umbilical cord blood could be a new, widely applicable treatment for repairing heart muscle in humans.

Brazil Launches Clinical Trials to Treat Heart Diseases
The Brazilian government announced that they would fund an ambitious five million dollar clinical trial involving 1,200 patients to evaluate the effectiveness of stem cell therapy to treat heart diseases. Half of the patients suffering from various forms of heart disease will receive stem cell therapy (from bone marrow) while the other half will receive traditional cardiac treatments. This study is the largest of its kind and is validation of the confidence researchers have in this emerging area of medicine.
