Karla Homolka denied statutory release TORONTO - The National Parole Board has decided Karla Homolka is still a serious threat to the public and has denied her statutory release. The board addressed a statement to Homolka explaining its decision. "The board is satisfied that, if released, you are likely to commit an offence causing the death of or serious harm to another person before the expiration of the sentence you are now serving according to law," says the statement. The ruling went on to state that Homolka's psyche was too deranged and her conscience to unaffected to allow her release. The decision means that Homolka, one of Canada's most notorious killers, will likely serve out her full 12-year manslaughter sentence behind bars. But the lawyer for the families of Homolka's victims says society should decide now what happens if Homolka is still a threat when her sentence is completed in 2005. Toronto lawyer Tim Danson represents the families of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy, two of Homolka's victims. "What if between now and 2005 she deteriorates or is just as bad," asks Danson. "The state of the law is we have no choice but to release her." He says it's time now for Parliament to look at some kind of sexual predator law that could keep untreated, dangerous killers in prison. In its decision released Thursday, the Parole Board says Homolka still has difficulty controlling violent sexual impulses and that she's still a risk to the public. "The fact that you continued your crimes after the death of your sister, which occurred while you sexually abused her, clearly shows that you have difficulty mastering your violent sexual impulses to the point where you put other people's safety at risk," wrote the board. In 1993 Homolka admitted to taking part in the kidnapping, torture and murder of two teenage girls. She also confessed to drugging her younger sister so she could be raped. During the incident, her sister choked to death on her own vomit. Homolka's crimes were described by the judge who sentenced her as "monstrous and depraved." Homolka remains in custody in a psychiatric institute in Montreal.
