Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are dating, PEOPLE has learned. Cruise, 42, and Holmes, 26, " have only been dating a couple of weeks," says a friend of Cruise.
The romance was confirmed by his rep after he and Holmes were photographed together, hand in hand, in Rome on Wednesday evening.

" She's a really genuine person," says the friend. " She's the real deal."

Cruise split with girlfriend Penelope Cruz last year. He and Nicole Kidman, who have two children, divorced in 2001.

Holmes and actor Chris Klein broke off their engagement in March. The actress, who launched her career on TV's Dawson's Creek, appears in the summer action film Batman Begins. Cruise stars in director Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Tom Cruise has a new girlfriend -- actress Katie Holmes.

Cruise, 42, and Holmes, 26, have been dating a few weeks, Cruise's publicist and sister, Lee Anne DeVette, said Wednesday. The pair were photographed this week together in Rome, Italy, where Cruise on Friday will receive a lifetime achievement award at the Italian equivalent of the Academy Awards, the David di Donatello Awards.

Holmes' public relations firm -- Baker Winokur Ryder -- confirmed the two were dating.

Both actors have had high-profile relationships.

Cruise's first two marriages, to actresses Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, ended in divorce. He was dating actress Penelope Cruz until the pair split last year.

Holmes and actor Chris Klein recently called off their engagement after dating five years.

Cruise in his nearly 25-year career has starred in such films as "Rain Man," "Jerry Maguire" and the upcoming Steven Spielberg remake of "War of the Worlds."

Holmes is best known for starring in the TV show "Dawson's Creek," and the movies "Wonder Boys" and "Pieces of April." She will co-star with Christian Bale in this summer's "Batman Begins."

Well at least he's being smart about being up front about it. I think the stars that try to hide their romances only incite a paparazzi frenzy, everyone trying to beat each other to the pictures of "proof". I completely understand wanting privacy, but it seems like they ulimately give themselves more privacy by just being up front and casual about it 9 times out of 10. Chris Kline is so sweet, it's a shame things petered out between the two of them, cause he's a catch! Cruise is just a weathly man who's well known for cheating on all of his wives to date and dumping them in a very rude manner for the next one.

yeah JP, they are still together. It's not a new thing, it's been going on for ages. Personally i think it's done for attention more than anything. I mean, how else can Demi Moore keep her name in the papers? She hooks up with Ashton and they are all over the tabloids. It's amazing the things people will do to stay in the spotlight Roll Eyes

Now Tom cruise does pretty well on his own, he doesn't need much more attention, but as an up and coming young actress (and from what i have seen her in she's quite good) having Tom cruise at her side might just give her a leg up

Course that's what penelope cruz said and she's still pretty much a nobody

I do like katie however even though she's 26 she still seems to have a baby face and when I first saw pics of Tom and her together even my daughter commented that Tom looked more like her father than boyfriend!
