Harvard commits $50 million to gender initiatives
Monday, May 16, 2005 Posted: 2:33 PM EDT (1833 GMT)

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- Harvard University will spend $50 million over the next decade to support initiatives on women scientists and faculty that were recommended Monday by two task forces formed in the wake of President Lawrence Summers' controversial comments on female aptitude in science and math.

The recommendations include a senior administrative post overseeing diversity and faculty development -- which Summers had previously committed to -- as well as better mentoring for faculty and first year students interested in science, enhanced faculty benefits in areas such as child care, and safe transportation for researchers working in labs late at night.

The recommendations also call for a "faculty development and diversity fund" to partially support appointees who "contribute to diversity," and for mandatory instruction of science graduate students on gender bias before they are allowed to teach.

"The recommendations will receive our most careful consideration," Summers said in a news release, adding Harvard would commit $50 million to supporting them. "We will begin immediately to implement certain of the proposals that are fully developed and to explore those that require further analysis."

Summers announced the creation of the two task forces -- one on women at Harvard, one on women in science more generally -- in February, at the height of the firestorm over his remarks that innate differences in ability may partly explain why fewer women reach top science jobs. Summers apologized repeatedly for his remarks, though many academics, alumni and students defended him.

On campus, the controversy became part of a more general debate about Summers' leadership style, which supporters call bold but critics say is blunt and imperious.

Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the central body of the university, passed a symbolic no-confidence vote in Summers' leadership in March.

The issue of women at Harvard had been on the university's agenda before the controversy erupted. In the arts and sciences faculty, women received just four of 32 tenure offers last year: Faculty are put forward for tenure by their departments.

However, until the Summers controversy, Harvard had not undertaken the kind of thorough review of gender issues that schools including Duke and MIT have performed, in part because of difficulties bringing together elements of Harvard's various loosely connected schools.

Cool Cool Cool

That's good of them, it's a shame it had to occur because of some old guys nasty remarks.  Women have come a long way in the past 20 years, but obviously we still have a ways to go.

Wow,

So because some idiot old fart spouts off some stupid comments, the University has put $50 mil towards hiring/teaching ladies?

Your right ladies, you have come along way.......... actually your here now. Theres no need to make any special allocations to allow an easier road for ladies anymore, because as you said.... you've come along way.

Unless the USA is different and you ladies are socially repressed to the point that you are not allowed to work ..........  if thats the case, paint me pink & call me silly because I must be behind in the news.

Right now there are initatives like this one all over and it makes me sick when I hear about them. Case in point. Local police force has a quota for female officers that must be filled every year, so do firemen. My point is not that its wrong for a lady to be a firewoman........ not at all. My point is that if she is good enough to be one and she can do the same physical teat that are mandatory for the men, then she deserves to be on the team. There are ladies all over that have been able to do this...... but as the years have gone by, more and more the requirements have slackened to the point where now ladies have thier own wieght they must carry while the men have a heavier weight, ..... last time I checked an unconcious person weighs the same for a man and a woman.

Then theres the educational grants for ladies at allmost every University out here (and there it sems) do people not think there are alot of men that could use finacial help? hell, when was the last time you saw Oprah insert some money into a male based cause? (anyone catch her party for African American Legends last night?   all ladies) Ladies only gyms? wheres the men only? there are none because laws say they are illegal to withold ladies from them.

In our provinces capitol city there is an old mens club that goes back to 1880 ish. Its an old relic of the days gone by when men would head down to the club and drink scotch and smoke cigars. Over the last 40 years it has been a very affulent mens club and the home to many parliment members on thier off time. In the last few years it has been made illegal for them to not allow ladies into the club? My real question on this case is "why the **** do you even need to be there"? other than just to say "you cant have a club for men only"

So in closing, suckers be you Harvard for letting yourself bend over and take it up the *** just because you have an idiot professor running his mouth. Grow a backbone, suspend the dweeb prof and be done with it.....

Ooops, me bad, edit the naughty man language out

Here's to cheating, stealing, fighting, and drinking.
If you cheat, may you cheat death.
If you steal, may you steal a woman's heart.
If you fight,
