Just minutes ago the Indonesian court Handed down a verdict of Guilty for Schapelle Corby.

She has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

This is a very sad day!

Please keep this girl in your prayers as we wish her strength and courage to fight this injustice!

Sorry But I didn't want to post the verdict on the old thread!

I don't even know schapelle yet since the verdict was handed down I have cried and cried.....this is so unjust!

Like most australians I am horrified by the indonesians courts ruling!

The poor girl must now spend 20 years in a balinese gaol for a crime she did not commit!

The prosecution are appealing......they want a life sentence imposed!!!!

The cheif judge has presided over 500 drug trafficking cases....today made 501.......each and every one has been found guilty!

I know and understand that drug smuggling does indeed take place in Bali however is it realistic to believe that each and every one of those 501 cases that that particular judge presides over is guiltyHuh

He has not once ever found anyone not guilty! There is no jury....just 3 judges! Judges who refuse to hear evidence from the defendants country and who also refuse to have evidence translated into their language.

When Schapelle Corby pleaded her case in front of the 3 judges she spoke in English.....not one word was ever translated.......when a transcript of her plea was put forth to the judges naturally it was edited and her words meant nothing!

There is outrage here in Australia at the moment.....most travel agents are boycotting Bali and are recommending australians to holiday elsewhere......I know I certainly wont be going to bali again!

This could have happened to anyone of us or our loved ones!

bec, it has really upset me too.  Such a beautiful young woman who will waste away in prison.  When I saw the clip of her after the verdict was read and she was telling her mom over and over "it's okay mum" I almost lost it.

The vision of schapelle telling her mum " don't worry. it'll be ok" just after she was told she would spend the next 20 years in prison was heartbreaking!

The courage she showed today was unbelieveable!

Naturally her defense team are preparing an appeal however the appeal process takes months if not years! Only after all appeals are exhausted will the indonesion Government consider a prisoner exchange where by schappelle may be able to serve out her sentence back home.....we're not holding our breath....that could take up to 5 years!

On top of her 20 year sentence Schapelle was also fined one hundred million rupiah.....which in Aussie dollars is about $14.000. If she can't pay that an extra 6 months is added onto her sentence can you believe it!

I pray for Schapelle..........I'm not sure if she will cope inside a balinese prison....I know I couldn't!

Australian woman jailed for 20 years for drug smuggling in Indonesia 1 hour, 27 minutes ago

DENPASAR, Indonesia (AFP) - A young Australian woman was jailed for 20 years for smuggling drugs into Indonesia, prompting her country's prime minister to appeal for calm among her outraged supporters at home.

Judge Linton Sirait said Schapelle Corby, 27, was guilty of carrying 4.1 kilograms (nine pounds) of marijuana onto the resort island of Bali last October despite her claims that a smuggling ring stowed it in her surfboard bag.

The student beautician burst into tears as Sirait said her crime had been "legally and convincingly" proven. She hugged her father and mother after the verdict, smiling weakly and repeatedly reassuring them: "It's okay, it's okay".

Her case has generated huge sympathy in Australia, where polls showed most people were convinced of her innocence. The trial, which could have resulted in the death penalty, has been front-page news for months.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who has been accused of not doing enough to help Corby, on Friday called on his citizens to respect the verdict while Foreign Minister Alexander Downer offered legal assistance for her appeal.

"She was subject to the justice system of another country... we have neither the power nor the right to intervene," Howard told reporters.

Friday's sentence, including a 100-million-rupiah (10,500 dollars) fine, could cause frictions between Jakarta and Canberra at a time when their often-prickly relationship is improving.

Security has been tightened at Indonesian missions in Australia after earlier death threats.

Unrelenting media attention has prompted the involvement of Australia's government, which urged Indonesia not to use the death penalty and has mooted a one-off prisoner exchange deal that could see Corby repatriated.

Holidaymakers have warned they will boycott Bali, which needs Australian cash to help revive its tourism industry after an October 2002 bomb attack by Islamic extremists that killed 202 people, many of them Australian.

Analysts say Corby's case has touched a raw nerve for many Australians who for years have seen Bali as their tropical playground and fear they too could find themselves imprisoned in a squalid cell.

The reaction in Australia contrasts to the enthusiastic fervour which greeted the sentencing of Indonesian militants convicted for the Bali bombings.

Opinions in Indonesia have been equally forthright. Many wanted to see Corby convicted to help fight a growing drugs problem and deliver a snub to what is perceived as Australian attempts to meddle in its neighbour's affairs.

Throughout the trial, Corby supporters led by her friends and colourful family have gathered outside the court in Bali's capital Denpasar to protest her innocence -- sometimes clashing with Indonesian anti-drugs campaigners.

Immediately after the sentencing, Corby's lawyers filed an appeal. Erwin Siregar, one of Corby's Indonesian lawyers, criticized the verdict as unfair.

"Testimony made by all witnesses presented by the defendant were pushed aside," he said.

Corby's mother, Rosleigh Rose, later launched a tirade against the judges, telling Australia's Channel Nine that she would fight to secure her daughter's release.

"My daughter is coming home. Today is over, but it's not the bloody finish," she said.

Balinese onlookers were more convinced of her culpability, but doubted she would be forced to see out her sentence in Indonesia.

"In a just a short time, she will be transferred to Australia and then set free and she will come here again under a different passport," said Gusti Alit, who watched the trial on a television screen outside the courtroom.

Of couse she won't!   If I were her Sister,
I would be making plans to leave Bali also!

This has just now been on a news program here, so sad!
Hopefully Celebrities, boycotts & pressure on the Bali Government
will give her freedom.  At least get her back to Australia.

The Indosesian embassey in Canberra Australia was the target of a bio chemical scare on Tuesday.

I hate letter which contained a white powder was sent to the indonesian ambassader. The white powder turned out to be harmless thankfully.

It is believed to be a response regarding the scahpelle corby verdit!

All australians are shocked and disgusted at this act.......this is no way helps schapelle.

Yes there is a lot of anger from australia about schapelles sentence however terrisiom in any form is no way to deal with it.

The indonesians are saying...."why do australians hate us so much"

We don't hate them however we do feel that their justice system is out of date and barbaric.

Admittedly there is some resentment towards the indonesians.........the bali bombing 2 years ago killed almost 100 aussies and last year our embassey in Jakarta was bombed......we have become targets for the indonesian terrorists.

Schapelle corby is the only western woman in gaol over there and we feel she's being punished for be an aussie. There is a mexican woman also serving time for drug smuggling.....she had 15 kilos of pot on her......more than 3 times the amount schapelle was caught with....and she only received a 7 year sentence! Also one of the ringleaders of the bombing 2 years ago received a sentence of only two and half years!!!!!!!  2and a 1/2 years for killing over 200 people........excuse us for feeling angry!

This situation is just horrible.  I hope they can arrange a prisoner exchange to at least get her back home.

Angry

This is going to sound really callous, and it probably is, but the question I would be asking of my government if I lived in Australia is, " How much money did we give to Indonesia for Tsunami relief?"

I don't think the punishment in any way fits the crime and it sounds as if they are being vindicitive.

the government donated a half billion dollars to the tsunami relief and ordinary aussies raised another 5 million..........and believe me half a billion dollars from a smalll country like ours is a massive donation!
