I've read several articles recently about Tom Cruise and John Travolta and the fact that they are into Scientology. I've never read that much about it.  So I ran across this information which I thought I would share.   Very interesting reading...
Can you say CULT?

From the Defamer

Mrs. John Travolta Picks Up Cruise’s Media Slack
Now that Tom Cruise has done “enough promotion already” and apparently has been muzzled by his War of the Worlds partners, L. Ron’s brigade is forced to send forth a new, C-list emissary into the world to spread the message. If they can’t have Tom Terrific doing a half-hour on Access Hollywood, well, they’re going to have to settle for John Travolta’s wife (Kelly Preston, whose “spousal duties” seem to leave a lot of time for pamphleteering) doing 1800 clumsy words on the HuffPost:

As a parent, I am deeply concerned over the escalating number of American children who have been placed on mind-altering psychiatric drugs over the last decade because of being labeled with subjective, non-medical mental disorders, like Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).All too often, parents are told that their child has a mental disorder and that this is a medical condition requiring that they be put on drugs. This is fraudulent. There are no blood tests, brain scans or “chemical imbalance” tests that can prove that any of these so called mental disorders are a disease, illness or medical condition. No such tests exist.
Sound familiar? Amazingly, Preston gets through the entire treatise without once mentioning the “S” word; however, she does end the piece with a subtle grace note, a link to fightforkids.org, a Scientology-backed website featuring a concerned-looking Hubbard Mom clutching a Ritalin-riddled child to her bosom. The tyke’s obviously been spooked by the prescription pad-clutching boogeyman that lives underneath her bed.

One of the best parodies ever of Scientology was in the movie Bowfinger.  They called it "Mind Head".  Funny Funny Stuff...

The thing I remember most about the Chruch of Scientology was that they had a big complex out in California near where I lived briefly, and they had Christmas lights up at Christmas... :inquisitive:

Actually, Mrs. Travolta is incorrect in her claims that - "There are no blood tests, brain scans or “chemical imbalance” tests that can prove that any of these so called mental disorders are a disease, illness or medical condition."

Actually, Dr. Daniel Amen has done quite a bit of study on the brain and ADD (however, considering he's not a scientologist, I'm sure she wouldn't take his studies as being legit).  The results can be seen here.  And as an ADDer I can attest to some of his claims - such as there being different sorts of ADD and how different diets can affect ADD...

And if you need a laugh - try this article at The Onion (which is one of my favorite satire sites).

Scientology Losing Ground to New Fictionology

LOS ANGELES—According to a report released Monday by the American Institute of Religions, the Church of Scientology, once one of the fastest-growing religious organizations in the U.S., is steadily losing members to the much newer religion Fictionology.

"Unlike Scientology, which is based on empirically verifiable scientific tenets, Fictionology's central principles are essentially fairy tales with no connection to reality," the AIR report read. "In short, Fictionology offers its followers a mythical belief system free from the cumbersome scientific method to which Scientology is hidebound."

Created in 2003 by self-proclaimed messiah Bud Don Ellroy, Fictionology's principles were first outlined in the self-help paperback Imaginetics: The New Pipe-Dream Of Modern Mental Make-Believe.

Fictionology's central belief, that any imaginary construct can be incorporated into the church's ever-growing set of official doctrines, continues to gain popularity. Believers in Santa Claus, his elves, or the Tooth Fairy are permitted—even encouraged—to view them as deities. Even corporate mascots like the Kool-Aid Man are valid objects of Fictionological worship.

"My personal savior is Batman," said Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Greg Jurgenson. "My wife chooses to follow the teachings of the Gilmore Girls. Of course, we are still beginners. Some advanced-level Fictionologists have total knowledge of every lifetime they have ever lived for the last 80 trillion years."

"Sure, it's total bullshit," Jurgenson added. "But that's Fictionology. Praise Batman!"

While the Church of Fictionology acknowledges that its purported worldwide membership of 450 billion is an invented number, the AIR report estimates that as many as 70 percent of the church's followers are former Scientologists.

Church of Scientology public-relations spokesman Al Kurz said he was "shocked" when he learned that Fictionology is approaching the popularity of his religion.

"Scientology is rooted in strict scientific principles, such as the measurement of engrams in the brain by the E-Meter," Kurz said. "Scientology uses strictly scientific methodologies to undo the damage done 75 million years ago by the Galactic Confederation's evil warlord Xenu—we offer our preclear followers procedures to erase overts in the reactive mind. Conversely, Fictionology is essentially just a bunch of make-believe nonsense."

Hollywood actor David McSavage, who converted to Fictionology last year, attempted to explain.

"Scientology can only offer data, such as how an Operating Thetan can control matter, energy, space, and time with pure thought alone," McSavage said. "But truly spiritual people don't care about data, especially those seeking an escape from very real physical, mental, or emotional problems."

McSavage added, "As a Fictionologist, I live in a world of pretend. It's liberating."

A tax-exempt organization, the Church of Fictionology stands poised to become a great moneymaking power if it continues to grow at its current rate—a situation Kurz called "outrageous."

"In recruiting new members, Fictionology preys on the gullible with fanciful stories and simple-minded solutions," Kurz said. "Fictionology is depriving legitimate churches of the revenue they need to carry out charitable works worldwide—important charitable works like clearing the planet of body-thetan implants."

Want even more intriguing?  This bit is truly Scientological belief (well, except for the galactic warlord bit, haven't found that anywhere - but the rest is)

Quote:

And from the Scientology site http://www.authenticscientology.org/page04.htm

What is an Engram?
The reactive mind does not store memories as we know them. It stores particular types of mental image pictures called engrams. Engrams are a complete recording, down to the last accurate detail, of every perception present in a moment of partial or full “unconsciousness.”

And how does one locate and erase these engrams?  Through "auditing" (which by the way, according to some reading I've done - costs between $3000 and $10,000)
http://www.scientologyreligion.org/pg008.html
When auditing is ministered on an individual basis, the auditor and the person receiving auditing sit across from each other in a quiet, distraction-free space. The parishioner is guided on the precise path any individual must walk to reach higher states of spiritual awareness. This is accomplished by 1) helping the person rid himself of any spiritual disabilities and 2) increasing individual abilities. Both are necessary for a person to achieve his full spiritual potential. The auditor uses an electropsychometer, or E-Meter, to measure the spiritual state or change of state of the person. By itself the E-Meter can do nothing, but in the hands of a trained auditor, it serves the auditor to help the individual locate areas of spiritual duress or travail so they can be addressed and handled.

Yes, fact is indeed just as bizarre as fiction...

Edited to add: I stand corrected - apparently Xenu is real also... This is the statement I found "Scientology warns that until one has completed a series of preparatory steps, exposure to the details of this particular incident can cause severe illness or even death.*" and if you are amoung the brave, you can view the details here:
http://www.xenu.net/archive/OTIII-scholar/

at the moment, I'm still alive and feeling healthy - I'll be sure to post if that changes... Wink
