Media Has Punished Tom, Says Spielberg
« on: Jun 21st, 2005, 11:33am »

Director Steven Spielberg says the media "punished" Tom Cruise's for the actor's televised, soul-baring declaration of love for Katie Holmes.

But in an interview with Newsweek magazine released Sunday the director downplayed speculation that the giddy public displays of affection by Cruise, 42, could damage Paramount Picture's publicity for his upcoming summer release "War of the Worlds."

The $135 million-spectacle, based on the science-fiction novel by H.G. Wells, opens June 29.

"I was a little upset. I was a little upset," Spielberg told the magazine, referring to the attention generated by Cruise's recent appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

"Not at Tom, but at the press for making such a big deal out of a kind of small thing. Tom lost his cool because he was deliriously happy, and now he was being punished for his public display of happiness," Spielberg said.

Last month, during an appearance on Oprah to promote "War of the Worlds," Cruise jumped on the talk show host's couch, then ran backstage to get Holmes, shouting, "I love this woman!"

A recent poll in People magazine found most respondents thought the romance was a publicity stunt.

Last week, Cruise proposed to the 26-year-old "Batman Begins" star atop the Eiffel Tower and immediately made their engagement public.

Holmes stars in "Batman Begins," which opened at the top of the North American box office this weekend.

Spielberg said he thought that actor was being genuine during his much-discussed TV appearance.

"What Tom did on 'Oprah' was exactly what Tom did with me when he first told me about Katie Holmes. But the press didn't like the way Tom bared his soul," he said.

If any of you saw this on the news and no doubt most of you did. along with the rest of the world.  This more than rude incident of the fake microphone was than disgusting!
Tom did not deserve this act, and he should persue whatever kind of
suit he can file against the JERK who did it!
The same magazine company did this to Sharon Osbourne this past Spring!
People, it is time for "freedom of the press" to have some rules during 'live' interviews!

Four people have been arrested after TOM CRUISE was squirted with water from a bogus microphone at the London premiere of WAR OF THE WORLDS last night (19JUL05).

Cruise attended the red carpet screening with fiancee KATIE HOLMES, and spent time speaking to fans outside Leicester Square's Odeon cinema before giving interviews to attending journalists.

But he was left drenched by the unexpected attack planned by the film crew shooting footage for an upcoming British comedy show featuring practical jokes played on celebrities.

The visibly shocked movie star struggled to keep his cool as he stood with his face, hair and jacket soaked with water - and he could not refrain from repeatedly referring to the microphone-wielding interviewer as a "jerk".

Before the man was led away by cinema security staff, Cruise said to him, "That's incredibly rude. I'm here giving you an interview and you do that, it's incredibly rude."

A police spokesperson has confirmed four people have been arrested on suspicion of assault.

After drying himself off, a composed Cruise returned to spend a further hour mixing with his fans.

Yes, Luci........we saw it.  It's supposed to be some dumb-a$$ed version of Punked.  When Sharon Osbourne was sprayed, she picked up a wine cooler bucket and dumped it over his head.........lol.

Ok, if I were Steven Spielburg I wouldn't be taking up for him too
much after he jumped around like a love sick puppy on Oprah!

He hardly gave the movie it's due!

Whatever and who ever uses a fake microphone to pull this kind of prank whomever they are, is totally a clod and deserves to be punished.
If Tom had taken a swing at him, he deserved it!  :punch:

Actually, it's a Brit version similar to punked, but just plain rude behavior.  Surprise celebrities with rude behavior and see how they react.    Tom was "working" at publicity for his movie, which meant even more cameras caught the action.  At least at home, with friends around and not in a work situation, the punked thing worked.

personally I thought Tom overreacted a bit!!!

No it's not nice to be sprayed with water however most people with a sense of humour and who are "blissfully happy" with their lives would have just laughed it off!!!

Tom get over yourself!!!!!

I don't see that he overreacted at all.  In fact, he ws quite civil considering. The guy didn't have to come back to him when he called out to him.
Suppose it had been a stalker with some harmful liquid in it?
Celebrity or common person, I would NOT take this so called prank lightly.  I don't like pranks, either on someone else or myself.  I would think this guy wouldn't like it either.

A prank by a friend is one thing, but Tom didn't know this guy from Adam.   I would have been shocked then started thinking that this guy was close enough to do harm, and he reacted to that idea, I think.   There are all kinds of crazies out there.

You know, when you do a prank which involves getting a celebrity drenched in front of his fans when he gave you his time to do an interview then you'd better bet there'll be repercussions. The biggest difference between this and what's done on Punk'd is that on Punk'd the celebrities don't get trashed in front of all their fans and it's usually not something that affects the person, just some property, or a deception, etc. etc.

Talk with Dr Phil and his sister, who has had
14 surgeries from a prankster throwing acid off a bridge.
She just happened to be the one driving under it!
Totally has ruined her face!  So sad!

Im not an advocate for pranks..... I just like doing them to friends...

I don't blame Tom for being pissed, I wouldnt but its okay for anyone to handle it the way they want to.

What does make me laugh is the fact that Spielberg actually talked to the press about this and made some densive comments.

Steveo, shut up baby. Next time you want to talk to the press just so your name and the main actor in your "now in movie theaters" movies name is in the paper........  just go on another show. You dont have to whine like a baby with a rash. Go grab your soother and your blankie and go home and cry some more.... or better yet, go to Toms house and cry on his shoulder, Im sure he's still bouncing around his living room screaming how he's in love, so maybe he'll be able to cheer you up.....

Personally, I think the headline should read "Tom is punishing US".

I'm sick to death of him.
