Gas Station Owner Cashes in $1.4M Pennies

FLOMATON, Ala. (AP) - Edmond Knowles started out saving pennies in a 5-gallon can. Thirty-eight years later, he was storing them in four 55-gallon drums and three 20-gallon drums - nearly 1.4 million in all.

Knowles, who runs a gas station, cashed them in Wednesday, pocketing $13,804.59 after they were counted at a bank.

``It's just something that happened,'' he said. ``I started so long ago that I don't even remember why.''

He got some help along the way from customers at Ed's Service Station.

``Customers would come by and say: `Ed, throw these in your drum,''' he said.

Coinstar Inc., a company that maintains coin-counting machines in banks and supermarkets, said Knowles' 1,380,459 pennies breaks the record of 1,048,013 held by Eugene J. Sukie of Barberton, Ohio.

Coinstar spokesman George White said the company's research and U.S. Census data indicate that coins worth more than $10 billion are sitting idle in American homes. White said the amount collected by Knowles is about the same amount that passes through a person's hands over the years. ``Ed just took the time to close his hand,'' said White.

My son cashed his in before we moved back to Florida.  He kept his in one of those plastic containers shaped like a bear (FROM THE ANIMAL COOKIES.   My husband helped bring them to the bank etc...  My husband was astonished at the fact there were a little over 30.00 worth of pennies.

over 13,000.00 WOW

Lake, I just noticed where that story originated.  We drove through there on our way to FL recently.  Grin

Oh my, I would die if someone came in with that many pennies at my bank.  It would take forever to count...Whew!

With my luck they'd be right in front of me and all of the other tellers would go to lunch. Sad

LOL Ibb!  Actually, I think only banks that have change counters (machines, not tellers) will even handle a stash like this.  And what about the weight of all these pennies?  How in the world do you transport that amount?  We have a pipe tobacco can almost full of pennies, and it's very heavy, and it's a can about 6 inches high.

We have a big jar also, for the male in the house hates to have pennies
in his pocket.  Banks don't want people to save them any longer.

Anyway, it took some doing to save that many.  Take a trip, Edmond Cool
