Oprah blames snub on colour

PARIS (AP) - Oprah Winfrey is suggesting she was turned away from the Hermes luxury clothing store in Paris because she's black and is calling the incident humiliating.

"People were in the store and they were shopping. Oprah was at the door and she was not allowed into the store," Gayle King, a friend of Winfrey who witnessed the incident, told TV show Entertainment Tonight.

"Oprah describes it herself as 'one of the most humiliating moments of her life."'

King said it's unlikely that Winfrey will shop there again.

"She's really OK. Her position is, 'I will shop where people appreciate my business, and I don't believe that any longer includes Hermes,"' King said.

The store appeals to the wealthy with their famous colourful scarves going for over $1,000 Cdn. each. Coffee mugs run over $100 while ties top $200.

A spokeswoman for Winfrey's Chicago-based Harpo Productions said Thursday the talk-show host plans to discuss what she calls her "Crash" moment when The Oprah Winfrey Show returns to the air in September.

Crash is a film dealing with race relations.

Hermes has apologized to the TV talk-show host who is reputed to be a billionaire for turning her away after saying it was closed for a public relations event.

Winfrey and "an entourage" unsuccessfully tried to enter an Hermes boutique on Paris' Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore, Hermes said in a statement.

On that particular night, however, "a private public relations event was being prepared inside."

"Hermes regrets not having been able to welcome Madame Oprah Winfrey and the people accompanying her to give them all the attention and service that Hermes is committed to giving each of its clients in the world," said the statement, released Tuesday. "Hermes expresses its sincere regrets for any misunderstanding that these circumstances could have caused."

Oprah's Paris Put-Off

It wasn't quite a 'Pretty Woman' snub, but executives at the legendary Hermès label are still scrambling to apologize to millionaire OPRAH WINFREY after she was reportedly turned away from their Paris store on June 14. And now Oprah's pals are speaking out!

TOM CRUISE told PAT O'BRIEN Thursday night that he was "just shocked" by the incident.

"I know that those kinds of people are not the majority," he said. "For that happen to Oprah, we all love Oprah. Oprah is such a great woman. I'm sorry that happened. I'll call her tomorrow."

The high-end designer boutique publicly apologized this week for denying the TV queen, her friend GAYLE KING and others entry to the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore store when they arrived 15 minutes after its regular closing time at 6:30 p.m.

On that particular night, "a private public relations event was being prepared inside," the statement said. But Oprah's friend Gayle tells "The Insider" that there's more to the story.

"I was there, I saw it," Gayle says. "It was really, really bad. People were in the store and they were shopping. Oprah was at the door and she was not allowed into the store. Oprah describes it herself as one of the most humiliating moments of her life."

A power player worth at least $225 million, Oprah is known for her deep pockets and generosity with gifts.

"This is someone who has bought 12 Birkin bags, none of them for herself," Gayle says. "All of the Birkin bags she has bought in the past have been gifts for friends. She had a 13th on order, which has now been cancelled."

In its apology, the luxury leather and designer goods merchant said, "Hermès regrets not having been able to welcome Madame Oprah Winfrey and the people accompanying her to give them all the attention and service that Hermès is committed to giving each of its clients in the world."

Gayle promises that Oprah will talk personally about the incident when her daytime talk show begins shooting in the fall.

"No one will tell this story better than Oprah," she says. "I'm sorry she's not taping now!"

I do understand why they didnt let her in, they had other arrangements that were in place.  But I still think it was a bad move on there part as a business.  No matter what really happened Oprah is loved by so many in her business becuse of her kindness to childeren, her show and her wealth,  Im afraid of what this may do to Hermès.

Does anyone understand what I mean?  Not sure if I put that the right way.

Yes I know what you mean.  It's been on the news every time I've come into the house for the past 24 hours!
What I don't understand is interviewers are
so concerned about what Tom Cruise thought about it?

Can't anyone get him off the tv screen.
His interview this morning on the Today Show
with Matt Lauer, Tom was the JERK!

The news media needs to let this die!
Yes, Oprah can buy the whole franchise and if I were her,
I might consider doing this!  That'll show 'em!

You know, 'don't get mad, get even'!

I totally agree that she should have been turned away. The store was closed, for whatever reason, end of story.

If she can't play by the rules then I'm sorry.  The world doesn't revolve around Oprah and her friends.  Even if she does do good things for SOME people.

As far as costing Hermes business, forget it.  They were around long before Oprah was put on this earth and they will be around long after.  To think she could put a damper on their business shows you how high and mighty she is in her own mind.

And furthermore...  Cheesy

It's a sad state of affairs when Oprah being humiliated makes world news headlines.  Same goes for Matt and Tom this morning.  Jeesh.

We have stuff going on in the world like this:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/06/24/iraq.main/index.html

And Oprah can't get into Hermes.   Cry

Why didn't someone just walk over to the door, open it and say "I'm sorry, we're having a private affair - we're not open to the public.  Please come back tomorrow.. " Novel concept I know.. but you'd think someone would have thought of it...

But then again.. these are people who pay $100.00 for a coffee cup... shows they're a few cubes short of a tray to begin with...

I think it says in the article that the store was open. It says that there were people inside shopping and she wasn't allowed to get in. If she wasn't allowed inside the store, why not just let her request some items and then bring them out to her?

In another article i read, it implied that she felt was turned away due to her race.

Gimme a flipping break Oprah. You were turned away because the store was not open to the public. And although she may be a multi-gazillionaire, since she was not invited to the event, she was "public"  get over.  Geez

I heard that her best friend, Gail said one of the clerks said it was because they were having problems with "North Africans".

And here I thought she was an American. Sad
