DESTIN, Fla. - A 14-year-old girl died Saturday after a shark attacked her while she and a companion were swimming in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida Panhandle, authorities said.

The teenagers were swimming on boogie boards about 100 yards offshore when they noticed a dark shadow in the water, authorities said. The other swimmer was not injured, Walton County Sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Shank said.

Both girls swam to shore, and the victim was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, Shank said. The girl was on vacation from Gonzales, La., but her name was not immediately released.

Jeff White, 49, of Atlanta, said his son was one of three men who brought the girl to shore in a raft.

"He said at one point, the shark was underneath them," White said. "So they stopped paddling. Somebody distracted the shark and they brought the girl the rest of the way in."

It was not clear what type of shark attacked her, said Stan Kirkland, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

"The girl was some distance off from the shore," Kirkland said. "I don't think anyone got a good view of the shark."

The attack happened near the Camping on the Gulf Holiday Travel Park, about 45 miles east of Pensacola. Swimmers were ordered out of the water along 20 miles of crowded beaches shortly after the attack. It was not immediately clear whether they will be allowed back in Sunday.

Robert Goodwin, 12, of St. Louis, Mo., said he was ordered out of the water by authorities. "I didn't know that when I was told to get out it was a shark," he said. "I was like, what? Wow, that's not cool."

Added Goodwin's father, Mark: "It was just an eery feeling to see folks sitting there on the beach."

Florida averaged more than 30 shark attacks a year from 2000 to 2003, but there were only 12 attacks off the state's coast last year, according to statistics compiled by the American Elasmobranch Society and the Florida Museum of Natural History.

If people would stay out of the ocean in the afternoon,
maybe this wouldn't happen.  At least not so much.

Folks, sharks FEED in the afternoon!
The news told of how many dangerous sharks are in the
Gulf Waters.  To my way of thinking, if it's a shark and it's
in the ocean[it's home], it's dangerous!

Such a sad sad story!

Here is the story on the second kid.  Poor kid...

PANAMA CITY, Florida (CNN) -- A 16-year-old boy was bitten by a shark Monday in the Gulf of Mexico, two days after a shark killed a 14-year-old girl off the Florida Panhandle, authorities said.

Craig Adam Hutto of Lebanon, Tennessee, was fishing with his brother on a sandbar about 60 yards off Cape San Blas when he was bitten about 11:30 a.m. Monday, said Gulf County government spokeswoman Paula Pickett.

The boy was in stable condition with injuries to at least one of his legs, said Christa Hild, a spokeswoman for Bay Medical Center in Panama City.

He arrived shortly before noon and was listed in critical condition before undergoing surgery, she said earlier.

Hutto and his brother were fishing in waist-deep surf off the Gulf side of Cape San Blas, a narrow spit of land about 40 miles southeast of Panama City. (Map)

The boy was reeling in a fish when he was attacked, said Gulf County Sheriff Dalton Upchurch.

The boy's brother pulled him from the water, and two vacationing medical personnel administered first aid, Upchurch said.

The youth was taken to a nearby hospital and then flown by helicopter to Panama City, he said.

Chief Les Hallman of the South Walton Fire District told reporters the boys were using shrimp as bait.

"The victim was struck unexpectedly," he said. "They did not see the shark before the shark attacked."

Witnesses told WMBB reporter Kira Mathis that Hutto was "in and out of consciousness."

Cape San Blas is on St. Joseph Peninsula, about 95 miles southeast of Miramar Beach where 14-year-old Jamie Daigle from Louisiana was killed Saturday in a shark attack. Autopsy results indicate the girl fell victim to a 6-foot bull shark, officials said Monday. (Full story)

Beaches in that area were closed after the attack but reopened Sunday -- though many visitors shied away from the water.

Daigle died Saturday morning from bites on "the lower portions of her body" after being attacked while she and a friend were swimming about 200 yards from shore, according to a statement issued Sunday by the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

Deaths from unprovoked shark attacks are rare, according to statistics compiled by the International Shark Attack File.

Seven people were killed in shark attacks worldwide in 2004, including two in the United States. California and Hawaii each recorded one shark attack death last year.

There were 12 shark attacks on Florida beaches in 2004, down sharply from 30 in 2003. Experts credit the busy hurricane season in 2004 for the lower numbers.

From what I have heard on the news, these attacks are not the norm.  Usually sharks attack people because they think we are fish (they see us thrashing in the water).  When they realize we arent fish, they generally just go away.  But when this little girl was attacked, the news said a surfer swam out to rescue her, put her on his board, and he would make a stroke, kick a shark, make a stroke, kick a shark, the shark was chasing its prey, a human, back into shore, which is TOTALLY out of character for most sharks.  They'll bite you, but if you can get away they usually don't persue.

Sounds to me like this is a rogue shark.  Most of the shark "attacks" in florida are very minor, just little bites, this one went in for the kill, totally not normal shark behavior for that area.

As a side note, did anyone read the story about the couple eaten by a grizzly bear while camping in Alaska last week?

I saw on the local news recently that while in the ocean one should:

Not wear bright colors
Not wear Shiny Jewelry
Not venture out past the waist

I remember doing all of the above as a kid.  Florida lakes have gotten just as bad.  I live in North Central Florida...plenty of lakes.  I remember swimming in about half the lakes in the Gainsville area.

The lakes have been overrun with alligators.  I would never allow my children to swim in them!!!

Few details, but just in from our local news.  Shocked
A man bitten by a bull shark off a Boca Grande beach today.  And he was air lifted to a Ft. Myers hospital.  No word on whether the beaches will be closed this week end!   Sad

Sharks have been feeding close in to the beaches in SE Texas.  Sea-Rim Park posted notices to warn people from swimming.   Sharks have been seen as close as 10 feet from shore.  There was film of several shark fins, and one close in. Reporters for one of the local TV stations reported even with all the posted warnings, people were still playing in the surf, and there was one man surf-fishing with water up to his waist.   Dumb-de-dumb-dumb!  This is an area where there are no life guards, just park rangers.   These are also bull sharks, feeding.

I'm beginning to question if all the satellite, digital, etc., that is flying aorund in space has one thing to do with how the ocean is making such drastic changes.
Does anyone have any thought on this subject?
Of course, I know the moon is the controlling factor with the ocean movement.  .....but I do question this process.........

The sharks were simply chasing schools of fish and feeding.  Not a good time to swim or fish, if you have common sense.

These attacks usually occur in the afternoon.
Why don't people pay attention to their feeding time?  DUH Roll Eyes
We've decided we have been in the Ocean our last time.
