......... off Caribbean coast of Mexico

Maritime authorities were on alert today for a woman reported missing from a cruise ship off the Caribbean coast of Mexico, a Carnival Cruise Lines representative said.

The woman was reported missing at 11 a.m. on Friday by her husband as the cruise ship Elation was returning to Galveston, Texas, after a stop in Belize, according to Jennifer de la Cruz, a representative for Carnival Cruise Lines.

De la Cruz declined to identify the missing passenger, who was last seen early Saturday morning leaving her cabin, and then on deck.

At the time, the Elation was located south of Cozumel, off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

The ship turned around and headed back to the area where the woman was last seen before continuing on its voyage Friday night.

"Once we received notification that she was missing, we did a full ship search and notified authorities once we did not find her," she said.

Carnival officials said the Mexican Navy had joined the search. Contacted Saturday, navy offices in Mexico City were not aware of the missing passenger or a search.

Maritime authorities issued an alert for the missing passenger to all craft in the area, the Mexican newspaper El Universal reported.

Carnival Corp. is the world's largest cruise operator.

Very strange!  If she wasn't found on the ship, she must have gone overboard, but the question is how someone goes overboard on a cruise ship crowded with people, without being seen?

I did a search to see if there was anything new... the only story I can find is the one luci posted above.  It was reported on local news here last night, but basically the same info as the report.. no name given.  The implication on the news was that they thought she might have fallen overboard.

Sadly this is not the first time I've heard of this happening.  There have been reports in the past of young women being kidnapped off the deck of a cruise ship late at night, by people on a separate boat.  In at least one case I read about, the woman was spotted later in another south american country, but not rescued.

There could be several answers to consider about this case.
None good!

What about the young woman who was vacationing with her parents,
left in a lounge chair sleeping off booze and never seen again.
Wasn't this about 3-4 years ago?
