7-Eleven's Slurpee Turns 40

It’s the coolest birthday of the summer.
Slurpee turns 40 years old today.  :balloon: :balloon: :balloon:

And Wendy Liebmann, president of marketing consultants WSL Strategic Retail, said the frozen drink — always served at a sub-freezing 28 degrees — is as popular today as when Dallas-based 7-Eleven introduced it in 1965. (It’s a 7-Eleven product and its birthday is 7/11. Coincidence?)

“Slurpee was one of the defining icons of American pop culture in the 1960s,” Liebmann said. “Forty years later, it still resonates with a broad base of consumers.”

Technically, today’s birthday marks the 40 years that 7-Eleven has been serving up the slushy drinks. Another Dallas company came up with the proto-Slurpee machine (using a car’s air conditioner) in 1959. 7-Eleven bought the rights to the product six years later and came up with the Slurpee name in 1967.

To mark the occasion, 7-Eleven is giving away one free music download with each Slurpee purchased this month. The company also will be giving away four Mini Coopers painted in bright Slurpee colors.

“Slurpees, music and convertibles seemed like a natural fit,” said Kevin Cooper, who manages the Slurpee line for 7-Eleven.

About 180 million Slurpees (ranging in size from 12 ounces to 40 ounces) are sold each year, Cooper said, but 40 percent of sales are recorded in June, July and August.

“A lot has changed since 1965, but not Slurpee,” he said. “It’s the ultimate retro drink, still cool even after 40 years.

“We’re going to have fun this summer.”
