The Final Legislative Approval for Same Sex Marriages in Canada should happen this week

Canada is now the fourth country to sanction same-sex marriage.

A 47-21 vote made it official on Tuesday night. And while the counting may be over, the debate, one of Canadas fiercest ever, will undoubtedly rage on.

The Senate erupted in a loud cheer as it adopted the Liberal government's Bill C-38. The bill gives gay and lesbian couples the right to marry in courthouses and city halls across the country and comes after years of bitter court battles and furious debates.

The bill will become law when it receives royal assent in a ceremony as early as Wednesday.

The issue has divided politicians who once stood firmly on the same side. Liberal MP Pat O'Brien quit his party caucus and Joe Comuzzi resigned from the federal cabinet due to his partys support of same sex marriage.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper maintains that he will bring back the debate if he's elected P.M.

One Conservative said voters will have the final say.

"Let the country speak at the next federal election," Tory Sen. Gerry St. Germain said hours before the bill passed. "Let's not pass this legislation now. Let's wait. Let's make (the election) a referendum on this bill."
