Plane crash

I just saw on the news that there was a plane crash in Toronto.  it is suspected that everyone was killed, about 200 people.  The plane is still on fire and is on TV as I write this.  Supposedly, the plane overshot the runway on landing, went off the runway and caught fire.  The weather was very bad at the time of the crash so that is also a factor in the crash.  I'll try to get more info after.

no fatalities, 297 passsengers, 12 crew.

14 minor injuries.

a miracle

the busiest highway in north america is closed during rush hour

the storms have also closed other roads because of flooding

a nightmare

overshoot the runway during a storm and skidded into a ravine.

here's one report from pulse24.com

Quote:
The plane was coming in too high, and she knew there was trouble.

That’s the story being told by one passenger on board an ill fated Air France Airbus, that slid off the runway on landing at Pearson International Airport on Tuesday.

Lee Romanov was waiting for a friend named Joanne, who was on the flight. Her pal somehow managed to escape the wreckage of the plane, which burst into flames after the accident.

Incredibly, she ran all the way to 401, trying to find her husband. She managed to speak to Romanov.

“She could see that they were coming down and she said, as they were landing it, it looked like they were too high, suddenly the plane took a drop in altitude and then created a very harsh landing, bumping several times,” Romanov relates.

“She felt that the tire has exploded and that they went sliding into the ravine.

“At that point, she said that she saw fire within the fuselage. They had popped the emergency chutes. She turned around and could see a number of people fairly beat up, some with broken legs that type of thing, and she said that just everyone was starting to slide out of the chooses to safety.

"She doesn't know if everybody got out. But she managed to get out and actually run to the 401 and call her husband.”

Several passengers have been taken to hospital, and while casualty counts aren’t known, it’s apparent there have been some survivors. An unknown number were picked up on the Highway, fleeing the scene.

Other witnesses watched in stunned disbelief as it all unfolded.

“It was raining pretty bad but not a single other thing taking off,” one recalls. “I didn't hear an explosion,” the witness recalls. “Our glass here is bulletproof so people can't jump out and stuff. There was no loud noises … I'm sitting in front of the building now and the smoke is just insane.”

Crews immediately raced to the area, trying to put out the flames.

Kevin Sutherland was aghast as he watched the drama unfold.

“A couple of people were standing by the window as the plane was coming down the runway and they said they saw a big ball of fire and explosion. They thought the wing fell off it as it came off the end of the runway but we're not sure what happened and then there is a large fire."

Smoke continues to billow out from the gully, as crews try to get it under control.

It's amazing that nobody died in this accident.  I hope everyone heals fast, mentally and physically.  If I were on the plane, mental healing would be the most difficult.

yes it's going to be hard for them Pocket, I agree.  Also the families at the airport were very distraught.  Understandably.

They did touch down but then the lights went out and the pilot for some reason could not brake.  The plane may have been hit by lightening.  It's all under investigation of course.

An Air France air bus....

It was bad... all the road were blocked of because they had to block off the 427(highway that runs along that runway)

Until about 7hrs after the accident I could still smell burning rubber at my house ( from the "crash")

I caught the tail end of a news story on Fox News about 30 kids onboard this plane.  Since I only got the end of the story, I don't know for sure, but suspect it was a school class.  Did anyone else hear the report?

Anyone who loves kids can easily imagine the kid's fear and the parents anxiety about their safety.  It puts a lump in my throat.

there was an exchange trip of sorts Pocket with 30 girls (some from Canada who had been to France and some from France returning to visit the Canadians) and at least one male teacher was also mentioned in the news reports.

The girls handled it pretty well to be honest.

Do you think people evacuated through those bag/tube things that are for emergencies and go from the plane doors to the ground?  Hmmm, are they even for airplanes? I know they exist somehow, hehe...
