Christopher Reeve's widow announces she has lung cancer
 
Tuesday, August 9, 2005; Posted: 12:53 p.m. EDT (16:53 GMT)  
NEW YORK (AP) -- Dana Reeve, who spent nine years caring for her paralyzed husband, Christopher Reeve, until his death last year, announced Tuesday that she has lung cancer.
 
Reeve, 44, said she decided to disclose her illness following rumors about her health in the media.
 
"I have recently been diagnosed with lung cancer, and am currently undergoing treatment," Reeve said in a statement. (Full statement)
 
"I have an excellent team of physicians, and we are optimistic about my prognosis."  
 
"Now, more than ever, I feel Chris with me as I face this challenge," she said.  
 
"As always, I look to him as the ultimate example of defying the odds with strength, courage and hope in the face of life's adversities."
 
Star paralyzed in 1995
Reeve, who starred in the "Superman" films, was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident in 1995. He died October 10, 2004.
 
Dana Reeve, an actress, was a constant companion and supporter of her husband during his long ordeal and his work for a cure for spinal cord injuries.
 
The couple has a 13-year-old son.
 
She is chairwoman of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, which funds research on paralysis.  
 
To date, it has awarded $55 million in research grants and $7.5 million in quality of life grants.

How sad.  It certainly seems unfair.  I hope it was caught early enough that her treatment will be successful.

I also saw from the news (Entertainment Tonight) that Dana is non-smoker, but she worked before in a bar full of smokers. I think it is not fair for her to suffer thru the sickness.  Cry

We can only offer her our thoughts and prayers.  
Hopefully it is confined and she'll be OK.
What isn't fair is for a 13 yr old boy to loose  
both parents too close together.
 
I do wish her a full recovery and this  
young boy his one parent!

I feel so sad for that whole family. First they lose Chris and less then a year later the widow is diagnosed with lung cancer. I feel really bad for that pour kid. A such a young age he loses 1 parent and possibly another one. I hope Dana can keep up a fight and win her battle aginst lung cancer.
