Girl Found Guilty In Day-Care Crash

A 14-year-old girl who drove into a Pleasant Grove day-care center was found guilty Thursday morning. of charges of injury to a child.

Eight children were injured in the May incident, including one who was trapped under the car and suffered burns.

After returning their verdict, jurors immediately began hearing testimony to prepare them to recommend a sentence to the judge.

06/03: Day-care center reopens after crash
The charges include two second-degree felonies that carry punishment of up to 20 years in prison. The driver could serve time in a Texas Youth Commission facility and transfer to prison after becoming an adult.

The driver's name is not being published because she is a minor.

Witnesses testified that the defendant tried to flee the scene after crashing her aunt's 1995 Kia Sephia into the Dream House Learning Center in the 10100 block of Lake June Road.

Dallas police accident investigator Robert Burke testified that the 14-year-old struck a curb in the parking lot outside the center and lost control of the car. She stepped on the accelerator instead of the brakes and crashed into the building, he said.

"As soon as she hit the curb, she panicked," Cpl. Burke said during a hearing outside the jury's presence. "She misapplied hitting the brakes and hit the accelerator."

This story is about a young black girl who had this horrid accident.  I'm not sure I can go along with her sentence, especially if she is given a prison sentence
for very long.
She was a crazy kid, learning to drive,
the outcome of her drive ended in horror!

My question to the Dallas Texas Courts is this;
would her sentence be as harsh if she were anyone else?  Maybe from a prominent family whose Dad could buy
her a renowned attorney?  A sad ending for one so young!

I can understand the parents being very angry about this, but if she was indeed just an inexperienced driver learning to drive, and it was all a horrible accident, then the punishment does not fit the crime.  What strikes me more is that we do place inexperienced drivers in unsafe settings where something like this could potentially happen on a regular basis.  It seems to me that safer methods should be made more available.  Simulated driving machines do exist where accidents can be at least given a chance to be fielded.  I watched Morgan Spurlock test on one, on his show 30 days on a segment about binge drinking and more specifically about how it impairs your reflexes while driving, but these could be used to simulate accidents in a sober drinking environment as well.  I'm sure they are very expensive, but perhaps one per county or something like that?  Also a closed driving course for initial learning would be very smart.

I never heard of this story until today, but if this young girl was just learning how to drive and the outcome was a horrible crash, then the girl should not be sentenced to prison for so long! And I would be more upset with this situtation if the girl would be given such a long sentence just because she is African-American. Like luci mentioned, what if the girl was white? Or Michael Jackson (I apologize if this comparison sounds too extreme or harsh, but I was upset by the fact that he wasn't sentenced to anything in his case)? I may also go overboard with this next statement, but this accidental crash could be compared to a person killing another only for self-defense! Would this person be sentenced to prison for life just because he was defending himself? I think not!

And I agree with Rhune on the closed driving course, that one should always be available for new drivers.

So sad for this young girl!

And I apologize if I offended anyone with my statements in this post. I am not all that great at arguing or giving an opinion, so I am very sorry if I sounded rude!

In my opinion, no apologies are needed for what you feel is right in this case.  I agree with all of you!

She was given a 6 month sentence in a Juvenile Dention Center.  As she's already spent 3 months confined, I'm not sure if this is the sentence after the 3 months or before.
Anyway, this will forever be embedded in her mind until her dying day.
She was also given a 10 year probation.

Rhune, with all the publicity of her trial and taking
the car without permission (so we were told), she
should be more than happy this is all she got.

The way the trial was going, we wouldn't
have been surprized with any type of sentence.

None of the children died, but one in particular
was burned from being trapped under the car.
A tragic day she won't ever forget!

We hear one or two stories a year about people accidentally driving into business, just in our general area.  They need to put those concrete posts or some other kind of barrier in between parking areas and the businesses.  The reason they don't is because of expense and appearance.

Well...she should not have taken the car.  There are very valid reasons that there are rules/laws regarding how people can learn to drive.  This accident is a good example of why.  A more fitting punishment would be to require her to serve X amount of time doing community service in the burn units of hospitals and delivering speeches to tweenagers about why those rules and laws are in place as she gets older.
