New Orleans Mayor orders evacuation

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Mayor Ray Nagin ordered an immediate evacuation Sunday for all of New Orleans, a city sitting below sea level with 485,000 inhabitants, as Hurricane Katrina bore down with wind revved up to nearly 175 mph and a threat of a massive storm surge.

Acknowledging that large numbers of people, many of them stranded tourists, would be unable to leave, the city set up 10 places of last resort including the Superdome arena.

"This is a once in a lifetime event," the mayor said. "The city of New Orleans has never seen a hurricane of this magnitude hit it directly."

The mayor called the order unprecedented, but said Katrina's storm surge would likely top the levees that protect the city from the surrounding water of Lake Pontchartrain, the Mississippi River and marshes. The bowl-shaped city must pump water out even during normal times, and the hurricane threatened pump power.

"We are facing a storm that most of us have long feared," Nagin said.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Interstate 10, which was converted Saturday so that all lanes headed one-way out of town, was totally gridlocked.

At 11 a.m. EDT, the National Hurricane Center said Katrina's maximum sustained wind speed had stepped up to nearly 175 mph, with higher gusts. The hurricane's eye was about 225 miles south-southeast of the mouth of Mississippi River.

The storm was moving toward the west-northwest at nearly 12 mph and was expected to turn toward the north-northwest, the hurricane center said.

The mayor said people who opted to go to the Superdome should come with enough food and supplies to last three to five days. He police and firefighters would fan out throughout the city telling residents to get out. He also said police would have the authority to commander any vehicle or building that could be used for evacuation or shelter.

A hurricane warning was in effect for the north-central Gulf Coast from Morgan City, La., to the Alabama-Florida line, meaning hurricane conditions were expected within 24 hours, the hurricane center said. Tropical storm warnings extended east to Indian Pass, Fla., and west to Cameron, La.

Katrina had been blamed for nine deaths in South Florida.

The storm had the potential for storm surge flooding of up to 25 feet, topped with even higher waves, as much as 15 inches of rain, and tornadoes, the National Hurricane Center said.

Only three Category 5 hurricanes - the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale - have hit the United States since record-keeping began. The last was 1992's Hurricane Andrew, which leveled parts of South Florida, killed 43 people and caused $31 billion in damage. The other two were the 1935 Labor Day hurricane that hit the Florida Keys and killed 600 people and Hurricane Camille, which devastated the Mississippi coast in 1969, killing 256.

The hurricane's landfall could still come in Mississippi and affect Alabama and Florida, but it looked likely to come ashore Monday morning on the southeastern Louisiana coast, said Ed Rappaport, deputy director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami. That put New Orleans squarely in the crosshairs.

"If it came ashore with the intensity it has now and went to the New Orleans area, it would be the strongest we've had in recorded history there," Rappaport said in a telephone interview Sunday morning. "We're hoping of course there'll be a slight tapering off at least of the winds, but we can't plan on that. So whichever area gets hit, this is going to be a once in a lifetime event for them."

He said loss of life was "what inevitably occurs" with a storm this strong.

"We're in for some trouble here no matter what," he said.

Shocked Sad

To all our New Orleans based members and their families (and anyone else who will be affected by this hurricane), I am sending out my thoughts and hopes you will all be safe and escape this without any personal loss. :crossfingers:

Isn't this where LibertyBelle lives?  Looks like we have at least one other member there according to the member map.

Here's the path and I'm slightly to the right of it.

My brother and sister-in-law live 2 blocks from the beach in Waveland, Ms. which is just to the right of New Orleans. They are on their way here now with 3 dogs, 2 cats and a bird. Her parents live just down the street and are invalids. They are now housed in the hospital for the duration. The 2 cats belong to them. I have many more family members in New Orleans. I am certain they will all soon be without power for weeks.

This is unlike other hurricanes in the past year. We haven't seen a Category 5 in many years. I've seen what only 55 mph winds can do. Now we are looking at 175 mph when it hits.  All we have to compare it to is Andrew which leveled miles and miles of homes.

I'm most worried about the people who can't afford to evacuate in New Orleans. SO MANY poor and homeless already. I see the downtown area being under water tomorrow.

Unlike a tornado where you can seek shelter, there IS no shelter with a hurricane. As the article said, all the interstates are one-way and northbound right now. You can't go south on them. It's a wicked thing to see.

This is the storm they've been dreading for many years.  All along the gulf area are in danger, but of course, N.O. is especially vulnerable.  I have to hope my family members have left Plaquemines Parish, and the Metairie, Kenner area.  They've always been quick to pack up and move out, out of necessity.    I worry about the people sheltering in place.  Who knows how the superdome will stand up to those kinds of winds?   We have to hope and pray all the shelters the authorities have chosen are truly shelters that will keep the people safe.

I think the flooding will be a bigger worry than the winds, with the landscape around N.o.  ... hopefully, if they can get high enough, they'll be safe... then again, when you get high up, there's more danger from the winds.. hopefully it won't be a direct hit..

It has already been reported the Levee can't hold back
the water.
Mobile is in just as much or more danger as N.O.

Unless some force of nature slows this
hurricane down, it will be as bad or worse than;
The Galveston Hurricane of 1900.

I've just now called Libertybelle and
only got the message machine.

Hopefully they are headed out of harm's way.
I did leave a message and asked her when she
is safe to post and let us know she is OK!

Nod, she told me she's in a safe area right now.  I'm guessing if she's online that's a good sign.  Hopefully it doesn't reach a place where she does need to evacuate!

I had to turn the television off, the news is scaring me and I don't live anywhere near New Orleans.

They are saying that if this hits like they think it will, there may not be a New Orleans anymore, it will have succombed to the Gulf Of Mexico.

THey said this was worse than Andrew because Andrew lost power as it neared land (?? really??)  but the waters outside of N.O. are at 90 degrees, unusually warm for that area.

They are saying that the sewage system will be demolished, there will be no fresh water and no power for weeks.  I only pray that those staying have an IMMEDIATE change of heart and hightail it out of there.  Wooden buildings don't stand a chance.

Now you see why i am not watching the newes Sad

may   watch over them

(turns into food scientist/microbiologist)

speaking of clean water.....

I was looking through a laboratory supply company's website recently... The company was offering FREE testing equipment to local health departments for the detection of Cholera to hurricane (and Tsunami) stricken sites...

Alot of major soft drink (and beer) companies cease production for a couple of days in order to can (and bottle) free water....

I would imagine this hurricane will be no different...

My hubby's ship is leaving tomorrow to go down there for a humanitarian mission.  They plan on being down there for at least two weeks.  Katrina's going from a storm not too many people worried about to one of the deadliest storms in history.  I just pray that these people can get to safety.
