Amber Alert issued on missing girl

Federal authorities were in Rocky Mount Friday to help local police in the search of a missing 12-year-old girl.

The girl, Jodie Renee Collie, is believed to be with a registered sex offender who was released from prison a week ago and started calling the girl after his release, authorities said.

An Amber Alert was issued Friday, signaling a nationwide manhunt for the girl. FBI agents automatically respond when an Amber Alert is issued.

Detectives have been here, and they've taken parts of the computer to check on e-mails, said Kim Baker, Collie's mother. We've called everybody we know.

I'm just hoping they find them.

Authorities said Collie might be with 27-year-old Phillip Daniel Denkler, who was released a week ago from jail, after he was arrested recently on probation violation charges.

Investigators said that the two might be in a beige Hyundai Sonata sedan with a North Carolina license plate that reads NWN-2630. The Sonata was stolen about 3 a.m. Friday from a man in Nash County.

The owner of the car is an (acquaintance) of Denkler, said Rocky Mount police Capt. Marty McCoy. We believe he might have broken into the home and stolen the keys.

We don't know that for sure, but it's an extreme coincidence.

Collie was reported missing by her grandmother after she discovered that the girl was not in her bedroom when the woman went to wake Collie for school at about 6:50 a.m. Friday at their South Cambridge Circle home, where she lives with her grandparents.

Collie apparently left a note, telling her family not to worry, Baker said, but it did not specifically mention Denkler by name. Caller ID led investigators to suspect Denkler might be involved, she added.

Baker said she believes Denkler and Collie met at a convenience store near Baker's house earlier this year.

I think he remembered her from then, and he started calling her when he got out of jail, Baker said. He was under house arrest with the bracelet and everything, but apparently, that didn't stop him.

Denkler is 6-foot-1 and 150 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes. Collie is 5-foot-4 and 114 pounds with blond hair and green eyes.

Denkler was convicted in 2004 in Edgecombe County of two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, and he served eight months behind bars, according to the N.C. Department of Correction Web site.

After Denkler was charged earlier this year with impersonating a police officer and reckless driving to endanger, he was jailed for a probation violation.

Denkler's last known address was Whitley Circle Way in Rocky Mount. When Nash County deputies verified Denkler's address in July, he was in the Edgecombe County jail.

I don't know how many times we can beat this thing over the head... I keep saying sex offenders are repeat offenders, ALWAYS. Here we have an example of a guy who started calling his next victim the minute he got of jail! Someone he had targetted before going in. Rehabillitation is NOT WORKING for these people....and at least in this case, neither is a tracking bracelet. Even Martha Stewart says she looked up on the internet how to take the sucker off. These guys need to be injected with a tracking chip, or better yet, NEVER LET OUT AT ALL. They need to develop a separate prison for these people and just lock them away for good....would it be considered genocide if we just rounded up and gassed all the pedafiles?

Rhune you are so right. It makes me so sick to see this time and time again. I dont know why people keep trying with these people. Being a victim of sexual assult as a child i have a very angrey point of view on this. These PIGS of people screw up lives and hurt people so badly. A poor child can never NEVER forget what was done to them and these stupid jail sentences are crazy! They should not be let out of jail they should be locked up forever or better yet just killed. These people are not normal or right. I believe they give up thier right as a human once they do such an awful thing. Any how i guess i have gone on enough. I hope they find that poor girl before it is too late
