India provides cash, medicines, doctors to help in US hurricane relief

WASHINGTON (AFP) - India will provide five million dollars and essential medicines to help the United States cope with massive devastation caused by hurricane Katrina on the US Gulf Coast, officials said.

In addition, New Delhi has offered large water purification systems for use in households and small communities in the stricken areas, where potable water is a key concern.

"As a token of the support of the people and government of India for the people and government of the United States, India will contribute five million US dollars to the American Red Cross for relief activities in those areas affected by Hurricane Katrina," said India's Ambassador to the United States Ronen Sen.

"Essential medicines that may be required" would be donated, he added.

India boasts the largest number of pharmaceutical companies recognized by the US Food and Drug Administration in any country outside the United States.

Sen said a medical team from the Indian Army Medical Corps, including a surgeon, an anesthetist, doctors, nurses and para-medics, could fly Sunday to the disaster area in an Indian Air Force aircraft.

"The team will have its own medical equipment and stores. It is aimed to complement the efforts of US organizations, will not require any additional logistic support and will not in any manner strain existing resources," he said.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Abdul Kalam had written to President George W. Bush conveying their deep sympathy over the catastrophe, he said.

"Having ourselves experienced the tsunami tragedy last year, we can understand the sufferings of the people affected by this natural calamity. Our thoughts and prayers are with them," Sen said.

The Indian and US navies had worked closely in relief operations in Asia during the tsunami disaster, although India itself was one of the affected nations.

A massive Indonesian earthquake last December 26 sent deadly tsunami waves through the Indian Ocean, killing more than 217,000 people and causing massive destruction, especially in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

I appreciate the thought.  I think we have the medical covered with hospital ships going down there, and the triage and getting sick people out is working now.

They could actually use some of the doctors in the cities they are being evacuated to.  Dallas has a "first stop" type thing set up where EVERY evacuee is checked before they are placed into a facility.  Make sure they don't have any diseases, no injuries, no sign of dehydration/malnutrition - basically anything that would require medical attention before they release them to a shelter/facility.

After they are checked, they receive a bracelet and are sent to one of the shelters in the DFW area (like the concert bracelets).  This is so they KNOW these people are supposed to be there.  They want to make the facilities as safe and secure for them as possible, seeing as how this is their "home" for the next few weeks.

Watching the news tonight, I heard them say some of the evacuees are getting sick.  I sincerely hope it isn't the start of a desease outbreak.

In Houston, they are not allowing any volunteers to work with evacuees unless all their immunizations are up to date.  Tuberculosis seemed to be the biggest concern mentioned..

Considering the conditions they were kept in for several days, we would be very lucky to escape an outbreak of something serious.

Before they were taken to where they'll be staying while
they are in our hometown was to the middle school for showers.  Surely that helped somewhat!

p.s. I hope the ones staying in NOLA
don't get a colera epidemic started.
