Cuban Doctors Ready; Awaiting US Visas

Havana, Sep 4 (Prensa Latina) Some 1,100 Cubans doctors specialized in disaster care are ready to be flown to help Hurricane Katrina victims wherever they are needed. They are just waiting for the US government´s authorization

The first team of 100 was ready to fly on Saturday if the US government authorized it for Houston´s International Airport, the closest major facility to the disaster area.

A second group of 500 would do it Sunday, said Cuban President Fidel Castro who made public on Friday night the offer to aid the Gulf State victims of Hurricane Katrina.

From Houston, he said, the medical personnel could be transported by air, water or land to the neighborhoods of New Orleans where they are most needed.

In announcing the Cuban aid offer, Castro said the medical personnel would each be equipped with basic medical equipment and 24 kilos of essential medicines necessary to save lives.

He said the doctors could work individually or in teams of two or more, according to the circumstances, and would stay for as long as they are needed.

In summing up the island´s offer to assist the hurricane victims, the Cuban president stressed that the total of 1,100 doctors would also take with them years of international experience and the basic knowledge of the English language to assist patients in New Orleans and other areas of Louisiana.

Press release from Cuban Government:

“Message of solidarity to the American people”.

“The people of Cuba have followed with deep concern the news on the damage hurricane Katrina has caused in the states of Lousiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Though the information received is still lacking in detail, it allows us to surmise that the hurricane constitutes a tragedy of immense proportions.

“In terms of the physical destruction and material damages caused, the hurricane is considered the most costly natural disaster recorded in US history. This country’s Red Cross believes it will have to work harder than it did following the atrocious attacks of September 11, 2001.

“Tens of thousands of people are trapped in flooded areas, have lost their homes, been displaced or taken in by shelters. The governor of Louisiana described the situation in New Orleans —where water levels continue to rise— as desperate. This city’s Mayor declared that hundreds, perhaps thousands of people may have perished there.

“This disaster, with its death toll and suffering, affects all citizens of the United States, but its scourge is felt all the more strongly by Afro-Americans and by poor Latino and US workers, who constitute the majority of those who are still waiting to be rescued and taken to safe places, and account for the greatest number of fatal victims and people who have lost their homes.

“These news bring much pain and sorrow to the Cuban people. On their behalf, we wish to send out a sincere message of solidarity to the American people, to state and local authorities and to the victims of this catastrophe. Every nation must feel this tragedy as its own.

“National Assembly of People’s Power of the Republic of Cuba,

Havana, September 1, 2005”.

Apparently they also held an assembly and observed a moment of silence for the victims of the hurricane.    I guess I grew up always thinking of Cuba as "the badguys" and while politically this doesn't necessarily change my point of view, it's nice to see the human side of people there as well.

I'm sure there is much we don't know.
The word, "communism" we know as bad.
It's good to know they do have a heart.

If Castro had been Christian, we would have viewed
his overtaking a good act, instead of a bad one.

Releasing the Doctors to come here and aid the victims
is a step in the right direction toward showing good.

Wow!  I hope the offer is treated with respect by our government, but I doubt they'll take advantage of it.  Even Venezuela offered more oil.  (You know, that's the country with the leader Pat Robertson suggested we do away with!!!)

Oh, we don't ever pay any attention to what Pat Robertson has to say!  Everyone should ignore his radical remarks!

I agree, but it's still big of them to offer up oil and may go a ways towards mending any damage Pat did.

I also read this and was shocked.   Wow.

Castro -- an enemy of U.S. President George W. Bush and frequent subject of condemnation from the White House -- said he would not comment on the U.S. government's response to the tragedy because "this is not the time to kick an adversary -- while he's down."

So true, LL... right now we need to all focus on taking care of these people, we can all play the "blame game" later...

Not meaning to be gross, but they might also
consider sending some Morticians and caskets.
