Local aid to Katrina victims

Our local AM radio station, our link to what's needed for the refugees, is broadcasting today to stop bringing donations of items.  We have donated too much, it seems, and they're taking a lot of this stuff to other shelters.

I don't believe many of our evacuees will stay here, except perhaps retirees.  We have no industry and jobs are scarce here.  From now on, we will be contributing to either Red Cross or Salvation Army.

I've been  hoping to see animal rescue people going in to NO to pick up stranded animals.  It's an overwhelming problem because of sheer numbers of animals. They would need to arrange for a huge shelter.   It breaks my heart to see animals chained to porches, unable to even fend for themselves.  I suppose their owners thought  they would be able to come back soon, and the dogs could protect their property.

Actually I saw a video on that, on CNN yesterday.  There is a group there that has been going around and rescuing all the pets and trying to build a database so people can find theirs.  They've also been rescuing people who refused to leave because they wouldn't abandon their pets.  They were asking people to donate to the Humane Society, etc., because they said funds are being filtered there to help pay for fuel, etc. to help rescue the critters.

On Oprah a few minutes ago, a man 24 yrs old
would not leave without his dog, a golden retriever.

His dog was 14, so he's had the dog since
he was 10 yrs old.  It was so sad, for he was
crying into the dog's neck uncontrollably.

Nate told him if he would let him take the dog to
another place in another town they would be reunited.

Yesterday, boy/man and dog got together again.

A sad story ends well  Cool

I've been watching animal rescues, and the sad state of these animals breaks my heart.  Their eyes are pleading for help.

Right when I was complimenting the people's response to this disaster, this evening's news really upset me.   Rumors were flying around Beaumont that, #1 the crime rate is up due to the evacuees, and #2 that children from Louisiana were going to spread disease in the schools.   Angry  The news reporter responded in a respectful manner (more than I could do) that the crime rate was actually down, that no evacuees had been arrested or accused of a crime, and that the children would not spread disease, they had the same innoculations that we did.

Parents need to sit down and explain the situation
to their children in a reasonable manner.
And the school also.
These children need answers.

It was adults asking the questions.  Who they got it from, I don't know.  Anyway, I hope that's just a fleeting fear and is gone.   One thing we don't need is creeping paranoia.
