MY NEWS - Helping Hurricane Victims
« on: Sep 8th, 2005, 3:32pm »

I don't think this belongs in The Grapevine,
for it has to do with a Hurricane Katrina family.

We got a call late Monday about one of the houses
we rent.  We met with the family and decided to
let them move in it.  This took some sweet talking
my husband.  I had told him a few days before that
I wished there were more we could do!

They left on SAturday before Katrina hit.
The Couple, two grown Daughters.
One Daughter with two little boys ages 2 and 3.
The younger Daughter 20 and pregnant.

She had to leave every baby shower gift behind
and come here with nothing for the expected baby.
He arrived after they got to Texas and is now
one week old.  She is so upset over leaving
everything and being a new Mother, she's cried
a lot since they've been in Texas.  The baby had
to stay in the hospital and only came out two days ago.

The Dad is on Dialysis and needs treatment
three times a week.   The main reason to get
out of NOLA and away from Katrina.

I showed them where to register yesterday
and what they need to do, so FEMA will  know
where they are and can give them some assistance.
We hope!  Undecided

Today on our hometown website, I posted
their plight and also their needs.

There is now a baby crib, changing table, nursery mobile, nursery lamp, stroller, car seat, clothes,
and household items.  A bed with storage is coming tomorrow, and mattress, couch, dinette suite being delivered today.

Clothes for the two little boys and the
Daughters and Mom & Dad.

I personally, am overwhelmed at the generosity
of people.  The two ladies delivering the baby crib
also gave me money for a new mattress, which
I've already purchased and is in place.

Our hometown and the county seat are
the two towns taking victims and set up
to do this outside of Dallas.

All in all, people are good at heart.
We only need a catastrophy as this
hurricane for people to come together
and  give.

I just wanted to share this with all of you.
Not wanting any great credit, but this is
where I've been and what I've been doing
the past two days.  The family is very humbled!

So am I!

Good for you, Luci!

Unfortunately I am not able to house anyone, but I have so far donated some money to the red cross and I have donated a case of bottled waters, a case of individually wrapped toilet paper rolls and a case of diapers to another local charity that is helping the families that have arrived here.  The chief of our local firedepartment has raised enough money to bring 250 families to our area and has been steadily working on getting housing and jobs for each one, so I am pretty proud of the way our community is pulling together for everyone as well.

I'm proud of the private sector.  Everyone has stepped up to the plate and delivered.    I'm not so proud of our government's slow response.....in fact I'm seriously pissed.  I don't want a scapegoat, I want the system fixed.

It is amazingly overwhelming how people ahve come together and helped out.  Our hometown doesn't lack for volunteers.

Shock and awe and happy that folks offered
so much after I posted the thread on the website.
.........and still more household goods and items coming Cool

Great job, Luci!   Cool  I meant to start my earlier post with that, but got in a fizz and forgot.  I'm sure your adopted family is floored by your and other's generosity.

My husband and I were wishing we had a second home to let someone use.  I'm not brave enough to invite someone in to live WITH us.

By the time we got out of bed this morning the phone
was ringing with offers of furniture.  This is amazing!
OK, I"m off to see what else I can do to help!
Maybe put all the food in the cabinets!  Grin

Thank you for asking!  It's all going very well indeed!
They've been given 3 dinette suites, and loads of other very good usable items and furniture.  A washer & dryer even!
Refrigerator is coming!

People have been so generous Cool

........as of this date, September 14, 2005, the family has received NO funding from FEMA or the RED CROSS.
ZILCH, 0, nada, nothing!  This is pitiful!

In Beaumont, people were told they'd have to start applying for aid at a downtown church, and no longer at Ford Park.  Many evacuees were still in Ford Park, many others scattered all over.  People started showing up, and standing in line in the heat.   When they learned no help was forthcoming they started leaving.  FEMA was giving out a phone number, and the Red Cross had given out all the money they were given for the area.  Seems they could have saved these people some of their dwindling energy and resources by just announcing that on the radio and TV. Word would have spread.
