McLEAN, Va. -- A baby born last month to an unconscious, severely brain-damaged northern Virginia woman on life support, has died at the age of five weeks.
 
The Torres family said in a statement Monday that Susan Anne Catherine Torres died of heart failure Sunday night after emergency surgery to repair a perforated intestine.
 
The family said that Susan's condition had deteriorated rapidly over the weekend.
 
Susan Torres, a researcher at the National Institutes of Health, lost consciousness from a stroke on May 7. Aggressive melanoma had spread to her brain, doctors said.
 
The baby was born Aug. 2 by Caesarean section at 27 weeks' gestation. She weighed just under 2 pounds and is 13.5 inches long.
 
The mother died shortly after her daughter's birth when she was taken off life support.

thats horrible...i wonder what caused the perforation in the intestine, that sounds like a random problem and not a consequence of birth....how awful for the family...she's with her momma now, and the :angel:

Ohhh how sad for them.  It was the birth of the baby that seemed to be the only thing keeping them going there.   Cry  The worst loss will probably be for the little boy they did have, who's still alive.  His father's probably gonna check out mentally for awhile in order to cope with this loss and the little guy will be effectively left without a mother or father at a crucial time.

Very sad, maybe they have parents close by  
for the Dad, and Grandparents for the little boy.

how sad. Losing your wife and then your baby girl so soon afterwards.  I'm sure the father and son have very close support network of family and friends.
