Blaze expected to be fully under control Monday

Sunday, October 2, 2005; Posted: 4:13 p.m. EDT (20:13 GMT)

(CNN) -- Firefighters battling a wildfire that has charred more than 24,000 acres northwest of Los Angeles have contained about two-thirds of the blaze and expect to have it fully under control Monday, according to fire officials.

The effort to battle the fire, which broke out Wednesday, has cost more than $8 million.

The "Topanga" blaze, which once included Chatsworth in its name, has destroyed 13 buildings, three of them residences, and damaged 10 others, including one home. Forty vehicles were consumed by the fire.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Jason Hurd told CNN Saturday that if weather conditions continue to be favorable, firefighters will halt the fire's spread by Monday at 6 p.m. (9 p.m. ET).

All evacuation orders have been lifted.

As the fire grew, 3,000 firefighters from Ventura County, Los Angeles County and city, the California Department of Forestry and the National Park Service worked 12-hour shifts.

Some 1,600 firefighters were fighting the Topanga fire Sunday.

Seven firefighters have suffered minor injuries, including one who was hospitalized when a boulder fell on his back.

CNN's Irving Last contributed to this report.
