(4TH UPDATE) A US Air Force F16 fighter jet made an emergency landing at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) around 11 a.m. on Tuesday after it developed engine problems, authorities said.

The plane, piloted by Captain Justin Dupuis, was flying in tandem with another F16 jet from Singapore bound for Misawa (not Miyazawa as earlier posted), Japan when Dupuis requested an emergency landing because of hydraulics problems, said US embassy spokesman Matt Lussenhop.

"One of the jets developed problems and landed here for assessment and repair," he said, adding that the pilots would remain in Manila until the plane belonging to the 35th fighter wing is repaired.

Airport authorities said the plane's electronics and hydraulics controls malfunctioned, but it managed to land safely.

Octavio Lina, head of airport operations, said the other plane did not experience any difficulties but also landed at NAIA.

"This was the nearest place they could land," Lina told GMA Network's radio dzBB.

Airport grass cutters towed away the jet shortly after landing on the emergency runway, and one international flight was delayed as a result, officials said. NAIA does not have any towing equipment for an F16.

Lieutenant Colonel Restituto Padilla, Philippine Air Force spokesman, said the plane did not sustain any visible damage.
