Nick and Jessica Announce Their Split

November 23, 2005

After more than a year of break-up rumors, "Newlyweds" JESSICA SIMPSON and NICK LACHEY have officially decided to call it quits, ET has confirmed.

"After three years of marriage, and careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways," the couple said in a statement Wednesday. "This is the mutual decision of two people with an enormous amount of respect and admiration for each other. We hope that you respect our privacy during this difficult time."

Back in October, rumors of a split started to swirl when Jessica arrived solo (and without her wedding ring) to her sister ASHLEE's 21st birthday in Las Vegas and Nick, who was scheduled to be there, was a no-show. Nick and Jessica were also reportedly apart for two more special dates: their 3rd wedding anniversary on October 26 and Nick's 32nd birthday on November 9.

It was just this fall, while talking about her new body care collection "Sweet Kisses," Jessica spoke with ET, offering marriage advice. "I think you have to always remember, and he has to remember, that you do need a compromise, even though it's hard," she said.

She admitted though, that sometimes strong personalities can get in the way of marital negotiations. "There's people with pride involved," she says. "You have to back down sometime -- just a little bit."

The couple married in Austin, TX, in front of 350 guests in an hour-long Baptist ceremony. Jessica wore a strapless VERA WANG gown and Nick sang "My Everything," a song he wrote just for his bride.

In a mailing group I'm on, one of the members there met Nick in Nebraska one weekend when he was traveling through, and he was very handsy with her best friend at a party. The gal on the mailing list was most uninmpressed. This was not too long ago, so I'm not too shocked to hear they are breaking up.

I'm not at all surprised.

I think Papa Joe was merchandising them (with their blessing) at every turn.

Some examples:

Jessica's line of body creams

Nick's album

Nick's appearances on a WB show

Jessica's coffee table book on making your own dream wedding

Jessica's (and Ashlee's) commercial for a breath mint

Jessica's albums

The reality show that, in my opinion, sacrificed the privacy that newlyweds need when trying to build a life together

The Nick and Jessica television specials

The special promotional appearances and engagements

"The Dukes of Hazzard"

A book they reportedly were working on about making marriage work

and so on...

It's hard enough to make a plain, vanilla marriage work without all the hype, attention, and scrutiny. I'm sorry the marriage didn't work out (although there's always hope for reconciliation) but as an old pessimist, I saw this coming everytime I watched "Newlyweds."

I find that funny, very funny :rofl:

I have noticed this about celeb couples. The ones that publicize their marriage are the ones that tend to break up relatively quickly. Whereas the couples that keep themselves tend to have lasting marriages (ex. Reese and Ryan have been married for quite some time now, as opposed to say Jen and Brad who had a somewhat publicized marriage)

I think for the first 3-5 years celeb couples should stay out of the spotlight. If you are in the spotlight then media is going to want to find the gossip out because its what people are interested in. I would imagine that people would have been more interested in hearing that Jessica and Nick were breaking up as opposed to Reese and Ryan (for ex.) that have stepped out of the spot light.

But I suppose some celebs see money and think they can make a very public marriage work.

But I definitely saw this one coming
