I live in what I and many sydneysiders believe to be the most beautiful part of Sydney. A beachside suburb called Cronulla.

Weekends spent on the beach with your friends and family enjoying a BBQ and the like is an aussie pastime. Our surf lifesavers are considered to be an icon and we all feel safe and secure when we see them spotted on our beaches protecting us.

Over recent years the beaches of sydney have been overrun by people of middle eastern decscent. That's ok as the beaches are there for everyone and do not belong to any one group of people. however in recent years these youths of ethnic extraction have taken on intimidation tactics and have instilled fear in many of we locals. We have been told to "get off our beach", "get out of our way".....australian women have been abused, spat on , called "aussie sluts" and told to cover up or we'll be raped.

Last week 2 of our Lifesavers were bashed by a group of 8 Lebanese youths because they refused to "get off the beach" . That was the straw that broke the camels back....the Cronulla locals then said " enough is enough" and called upon all locals to converge on the beach this past weekend and stand up for ourselves after years of fear and intimidation by these groups of lebenese youths.

More than 5000 people turned up including myself and husband as we have both in the past been abused by these people. we were sick and tired of fearing going to our local beach so we thought we'd take a stand.

Things turned violent at one stage when a few youths of middle eastern appearance turned up however the large number of these youths that were expected stayed away and thanfully the huge standoff didn't happen. As the night progressed and locals went home that is when the gangs of lebenese youths turned up and caused havoc. They weilded baseball bats, iron bars and other weapons smashing anything that was in their way. Over 100 cars were destroyed, shops and restaurants had windows smashed.

As several locals were walking home peacefully and innocently the gang of lebense youths began abusing the young women in the group and threatened to rape them and when the 2 men with them went to their defence the gang pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the young men in the back. He is a serious condition in hospital. Another group of these youths then attacked one man bashing him to unconsciouness.

Tension was still high today and police maintained a high presence in the area. About 2 hours ago 10.30pm monday Aussie time whilst my husband and i were settling down for the night we heard police sirens blaring outside, cars speeding and loud voices. we raced outside to find car loads of lebenese gangs screaming up and down the road with dozens of police cars in pursuit. as we and our neighbours looked on in disbelief one car full of these youths stopped infront of our home and out jumped 6 youths holding baseball bats and bricks. They smashed our cars, threw bricks at our windows and threatened to rape me and my neighbour and to kill our husbands. as we raced inside and locked our doors more carloads of these thugs sped into Cronulla and continued to destroy more cars and other property. These thugs were armed with guns and news reports claim one man has been shot!

Neither my hubby or I can sleep as sirens are still blaring and we have police and media helicopters flying overhead. Our once peaceful part of the world has turned into a warzone and to be honest we are scared!!!!

Australia prides itself on being a multicultral country.....it doesn't work! Since 9/11 the muslims throughout the world have used fear and intimidation to get what they want. We aussies welcome anyone and everyone but please respect our way of life and just because we don't follow a certain religion doesn't mean we're not worthy of respect!

If people of different races, religions and backgounds don't like our way of life then GO HOME!

AUSTRALIA........LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!

I've heard of this news here as well (just earlier, actually). I didn't know how horrible it really is. I thought it was just a group of Lebanese youth protesting that just turned violent. I can't imagine what you're going through bec. It's a nightmare! Shocked

I'm sorry to hear this is going on, Bec. These are hoodlums, no matter what ethnic origins they are. Not only are they threatening and insulting the people and country of Australia, they're behaving in a way that would make them unwanted in any country. It sounds like you need a strong police presence on the beaches and in your neighborhood.

We saw a bit of this on the evening news tonight. I hope you and your husband stay at home and stay indoors. Whoever is causing trouble, you don't want to be in the middle of it, when you have children to worry about. I hope this dies down, and peace is restored ASAP.
