Prince Harry doing his duty By César G. Soriano, USA TODAY LONDON — Is Britain's Prince Harry going to war in Iraq? That became a distinct possibility Wednesday when the royal family confirmed that Harry, 21, would join an elite army unit in April after completing his training at Sandhurst military academy. Harry, the youngest son of Prince Charles and third in line to the British throne, will serve in the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry, with the goal of becoming an armored reconnaissance officer. The regiment already has seen action in southern Iraq. After completing officer and specialist training, the prince would lead a team of about 12 soldiers carrying out reconnaissance work. Andrew Parker Bowles, the ex-husband of Harry's new stepmother, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, also is a veteran of the Blues and Royals. James Hewitt, who had an affair with Harry's mother, the late Princess Diana, served in the Household Cavalry during the first Gulf War but with a different regiment. "There is no way I am going to put myself through Sandhurst and then sit back home while my boys are out fighting for their country," Harry told reporters in September. The British royal family has a long tradition of military service. Charles was a pilot in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy in the 1970s. Prince Andrew, Harry's uncle, was a helicopter pilot in the Falklands War in 1982. Harry's grandfather, Prince Philip, is a decorated World War II veteran. Prince William, 23, who also is training at Sandhurst, has said he also intends to serve on the front lines upon graduation. Harry seems to have shed his reputation as a wild child. In 2002, the underage prince was caught smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol. Two years later, he was involved in a fight with paparazzi. In January 2005, Harry caused an international uproar when he was photographed wearing a Nazi uniform to a costume party. http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2006-01-25-harry-military-service_x. htm?POE=LIFISVA
