Lachey Reserves Right to Seek Support
Sat Feb 18, 7:39 PM ET

LOS ANGELES - (AP) Nick Lachey wants what's his, and maybe what's Jessica Simpson's.

In court papers filed Friday in response to Simpson's Dec. 16 divorce filing, Lachey said he was reserving the right to seek spousal support, even though she has asked the court not to give him any.

The singing couple, who starred in their own MTV reality show, "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica," had no prenuptial agreement.

He cited irreconcilable differences for the dissolution of the three-year marriage.

The 32-year-old Lachey also asked the court to confirm that "miscellaneous jewelry and other personal effects" are separate property, as well as his earnings from after the date of separation and other unspecified assets.

He said they separated Dec. 13, although she claims it was Nov. 23.

Lachey, who gained fame as a member of the boy band 98 Degrees, had more earning power when the couple wed in October 2002. However, Simpson's fame skyrocketed during the marriage. The 25-year-old singer-actress reportedly earned more than $30 million last year, including earnings from her big-screen debut playing Daisy Duke in "The Dukes of Hazzard" movie.

Last month, the Mediterranean-style house the pair shared during "Newlyweds" was sold to "Malcolm in the Middle" teen actor Justin Berfield for an undisclosed price.

How sad is it that a 32 year old man in good health and with a career of his own, decides he needs "spousal support" from his wife.  Greedy and disgusting.

on the same token however, if Nick had made more money than Jessica during their marriage would she seek support from him?

This is why celebrities should sign prenuptial agreements

I would consider it greedy and disgusting if she did the same as well.

Rhune, I should have reworded it better. I didn't mean would you find it equally terrible. I am curious if Jessica would have sought support if Nick had made more money. Perhaps that is Nick's logic? I donno

The argument is that Jessica's career would never have been what it has been the past few years (especially the movie deal and commercials) had it not been for their "Newlywed" show.  He's not actually asked for spousal support.  Jessica was the one who brought it up when she specifically had her attoney put in the divorce papers that she would not pay spousal support.  After she made that comment, Nick wanted it put into the the agreement that he had the right to ask for spousal support, since there was no prenup.

He's getting a lot of flack for this, but in all honesty his career got put on hold after the break up of 98Degrees and his marriage because of the MTV show.   Had he not agreed to do those things with Jessica, it is most likely HIS career would have been the one that flourished, not hers.  She is only what she is today because of her publicity while being married to him.

that is a good point yesteach. i know the only reason I heard about Jessica Simpson was because I listened to 98 degrees and knew that she was dating Nick from 98.

And of course she became famous for her stupidity on Newlywed's

I did note that Nick said something about gifts....which I understoon to mean he wants the gifts he gave her back, or compensation.  That, I find tacky.   Gifts are supposed to be gifts.

I would find that tacky too.  I had assumed he meant he wanted his fair share of gifts that were given to them as a couple.

I mean, how's a party boy like this supposed to maintain his life of wenches and ho's without the ex-wife's money?  Sheesh, we are just being unkind.  He just wants what he thinks he should have...  GET A JOB!

Rhune, I do believe Nick Lachey has a solo singing career.  In fact, a new single just popped up on one of our local radio stations.

Yeah, I know he has a career.  I was being facetious.  My point was that he is young and in good shape, good looking and already has a career.  I can see him wanting to split any money made while they were a couple, and I don't begrudge him that at all.  I agree he gave up his fair share of life for thier tv show as well and deserves a fair share of the profits, etc.  However, I think seeking spousal support is for someone who is physically unable to do for themselves or someone who has young children and can't provide enough on their own to give those children what they need to survive and not starve themselves in the process.  Spousal support is not for healthy young men (or women) with a career of their own, regardless of what excessive "lifestyle" they have become accustomed to.

If it is indeed just in rebuttal to her saying he can't see spousal support, rather than his really trying to seek it, I still am unimpressed with the childish "gotcha" game.

I see, Rhune.

One things for certain.  I'm sure Nick ain't no Kevin Federline!

In other celebrity divorces, I read quick quip of the divorce settlements between Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt.  Jennifer gets to keep the $29 million dollar mansion, while Brad gets control of their Film Production Company (called Project B?) worth $50 some million or something, with Jennifer getting a minor stake.

I'm not entirely surprised by that, considering she already started a similar production company with Courtney Cox, shortly after the divorce.
