Violent storm blamed for one death in Kiosk

Nugget Staff
Local News - Tuesday, July 18, 2006 @ 08:00

A violent storm with possible tornadoes that swept across the region Monday is blamed for at least one death, Ontario Provincial Police say.

The incident also left one person with serious injuries. In Mattawa, two people were treated for non-life threatening injuries as a result of the storm that devastated the town of 5,000, 60 kilometres east of North Bay.

Police were called to the north end of Algonquin Park around 8:40 p.
m near Kiosk where people had camped in the Kioshkokwi and Mink lakes area and confirmed the death, but no other details were available. Next of kin are being notified, police said.

Another storm-related death was reported near Peterborough.

The storm forced the closure of Highway 533 between Mattawa and Highway 63 due to fallen trees.

In North Bay, at least 10,000 people are still without power and it could take up to 24 hours to have the city back on line.

In the region, about 35,000 homes are without power and Hydro One officials said it could take until Friday to get the power back on to all homes.

Mattawa, Callander and West Nipissing have declared states of emergency.

Environment Canada has officials on the scene investigating possible tornadoes.

Very few gas stations are open and those businesses still operating are doing it on a cash-only basis because bank and debit machines are down.

Many people are also being forced to throw out food.

A man from southern Ontario is arriving in North Bay this afternoon from Barrie with 200 gasoline generators for sale.

I live in the area that this strom hit and it was a good one.  I was a work when it happened.  One minute it was pretty nice outside then the next it was just crazy outside.  You couldnt see anything when you looked out the window (I was freaking out a bit, I have never seen anything like it).  I am lucky, I got my power back 12 hrs after the storm but the surrounding areas could go days with out power.  Im my area we are very lucky, we dont get tornados, hurricans but this storm did do a bit of damage.  We went to my parents house last night becuse we were starving and they made noodles on the BBQ.  By my parents house power lines were down and there poor neighbours had a tree that dropped on the back of there house.  Alot of trees were up rooted.  It was a crazy site to see.  Power is still not on in the area that my bank is in so I have the day off.
