Slow speed chase

We've had a crazy day here today... for the past three and a half hours there has been an 18-wheeler going through the Dallas/Fort Worth area.  From what the news is reporting the truck was stolen and a hostage kidnapped (possibly the owner/driver of the truck).

After going through four counties and about a dozen different cities, the state highway patrol finally shot the fuel tank, and the truck stopped and diesel fuel is leaking out all over the interstate.  I-20 is closed in both directions.  When the truck stopped, the guy pulled the hostage to the back of the cab, into the sleeping area... they do know he has a gun, and the police negotiators are talking to the guy... but it's a scary tense situation.

If you should read this, please keep this lady and the police officers involved in your thoughts and prayers, that this will end safely.  I will say that the local police departments were awesome all afternoon at keeping people off the interstate, blocking exit ramps, etc.  They kept the truck on the interstate by blocking all exits ahead of the truck, and blew out the tires, so that it was a slow speed.  The only vehicle that was hit in the whole three hour ordeal was a police cruiser, which was hit early on, when the guy stopped and made the woman take over driving.  The car was parked and the truck more or less, hit it easily and just pushed it out of their way and took off.  There were NO accidents anywhere along the way and so far no one has been injured.

He has contacted the local news by telephone - he asked to speak to a specific local news team, and has made statements to them.  The local news reporter feels that from his statements he was determined that this would not end voluntarily... and that she is afraid it will not end well.  I am so hoping that he will let the lady go before he decides to do anything else.. Sad

AS of right now, it's been four hours.  They finally went back to regular programming on the local stations.  They still have a hostage negotiator talking to the guy, and he is still holding the woman... I think local stations took it off since it's been almost 30 mins since they stopped.  I'm thinking they don't want it on the air, just in case things don't go well.. Sad  Please keep this lady and her family in your thoughts and prayers.. no one knows anything yet about who she is or how this happened.. they also think this is the same guy who carjacked a Lexus this morning.  The stolen Lexus was found wrecked in the same town where the semi was hijacked.. Sad

Thankfully, they got both out safely.  From the way it looked they shot tear gas into the cab.  The guy came out of the cab without the woman, which worried me!  Also, there was a dog in the cab??  Anyway, they were showing the police arresting the guy, saying there was still no sign of the woman... finally said, "she has been taken from the cab"... I was still a little worried, until the newscaster said, "let me rephrase that.. she has been safely taken from the cab!"  I'm wondering if she refused to come out with him for fear there might be shooting when he came out... or if he'd knocked her out or something...

Regardless, all is well - no one was hurt... and it has all ended safely for everyone!!

I'm glad everything turned out okay.  The only thing that bothers me is why in the world did the police shoot out the gas tank?  I realize there probably wouldn't be an explosion since deisel doesn't react the same way as gasoline, but now there is deisel fuel all over the highway and I'm sure they'll have the hazmat teams out there to clean it up.  The highway should be as good as new in a few weeks. Undecided

How desperate do you have to be to "run", knowing it couldn't end well for you, either way.   He was probably high on something and scrambled his thought processes.

The news reports last night said that they believe it was the same guy who carjacked a Lexus earlier in the day (he matched the drivers description, right down to the gun he was carrying).  The Lexus was found wrecked not far from where he hijacked the truck.  Shell casings and blood were found in the Lexus.

The truck that was hijacked was being driven by a husband and wife... the were at a truck stop and had JUST refueled.  As the husband started to get in the truck (according to reports), this guy comes up with a gun, and makes him get out of the truck and he takes off in it.  I don't know if he knew the woman was in the truck or not at that point.  The other people at the truck stop saw what was happening and called police.

Just before they were finally stopped, he asked to speak to a local news station (and specified the one he wanted).  The negotiator contacted a reporter from that station and she called and spoke with him.  She said he sounded very calm, and resolute that this was not going to end well for him and he was not going to stop.

After they finally got outside of the Fort Worth area, into a more rural area... DPS took over, and they are the ones who shot (again according to the news), the radiator or engine block and punctured a fuel line/tank (I don't know if the fuel thing was intentional or it just got hit in trying to hit the engine.  They were having to shoot from the side, as the woman was weaving back and forth across the road to keep them from getting in front of them.... I'm sure the guy was telling her what to do.

The woman was amazing... she drove that thing a good two hours on rims!  The front tires were taken out by spikes within the first hour.  After the tires were blown, the guy made her drive... I'm sure because he couldn't control it... she was very calm... a couple of times it showed her waving to people... at one point they thought maybe it wasn't a hostage situation due to this.. I think he was making her do that, now that all's said and done.   By the time she finally got out of Ft. Worth... driving into the setting sun... you could see her getting frustratated..at one point she started hitting on the steering wheel.. looked like she was wiping sweat or tears from her face (the long range cameras on the news helicopters could get fairly clear shots of the inside of the cab)... I was really impressed that she managed all tihs and never hit anyone or caused an accident or lost control of that rig...

anyway.... I've not heard anything today, going to go watch the noon news reports... see if they say anymore about her  or her condition... they never showed her last night...

She got out of the cab with her dog before the tear gas was shot into the cab!
Shaken up a bit, she is going to be fine, guess as soon as her nerves settle down.
He is being arrainged today in the Collin County Court
(the county where we live) & where the hijack took place.

Not only did the suspect commit these crimes on Sunday, but had spent
9.5 yrs in Prison.  He is suspected of attempting to hijack a Pu the night
before, had told his family he wouldn't see them again.  He HAD no intention
of being captured, was frustrated since he couldn't find a good paying job,
was having trouble with his girlfriend!

Frustrated with life, period!  Well, duh here, aren't we all!
Except we don't kidnap innocent people, force cities to spend thousands
of dollars chasing us during our frustration either.  Deal with it, Buddy!

Why is it criminals always have a good excuse, at least to themselves!
He won't have to be frustrated for a long time, will be fed 24/7, watch TV,
lay around all day.  This guy has it made now!  So he may think!  Roll Eyes

Today's article:
http://www.wfaa.com/

Editiing to say:
His trial will be in Collin County.
There's a strong chance one of us could be called as a Juror.  I doubt they would select either of us as we watched his mess unfolding on TV, BUT who knows......

Physically, she's OK...mental condition is something else.  I hope she can put this behind her.   One thing I've been thinking about....if this couple owns this truck,  they will have to pay lots of $$ to get it fixed.   I heard they shot the fuel tank, the radiator and flattened several tires.    I hope they will get some money for all that damage, without having to tap their insurance.  How many policies have coverage for "hostage situations and slow speed chases"?

I saw her this morning on the news... first time she's spoken publically since it happened... very quiet, didn't dicuss it too much, I didn't realize who it was when she first started talking (was on the computer.. shocking, I know.. ).  They asked who she was talking to on the cell phone.. she said her kids.. she was telling them goodbye because she didn't know how it was going to end.. Sad
