Hmm...what he said while drunk will probably hurt him in a big way if there isn't a big public atonement.  On top of being just a wrong and terrible thing to say, it was really really stupid for him to say in light of all the controversy of his film a couple years ago.  He's already had one promised deal with a network for a mini-series cancelled as a result.

Aside from all of that, I have to ask, what would make a man who's a former drug addict/drunk and been clean for several years and successful - at the top of his game - decide to start drinking again?  Apart from stupid remarks, what about destroying everything else in your life with out of control alcoholism?  Is he trying to commit career suicide?  Is he so full of hate for himself that he would let himself get out of control like this after having a firm grip on it?

He'll be paying the pennance for this little stunt for years.

People are stupid when they're drunk, and say stupid things, and Gibson's comments were hateful.  Mel Gibson's problem is, he's high profile, and there were questions that came up after his Last Temptation of Christ.   People were already doubtful of his motives.   No doubt he will pay for this, but  he's already a rich man, and he'll weather the storm, eventually.  He has apologized, more than once, but memories are long.   His worst problem is,  he fell off the wagon.  Addicts do, and usually the fall is steep and hard.  I hope he comes out of re-hab more determined to stay sober.   That's really ironic when he helped  when Robert Downey, Jr. was down and out.

Mel is an arrogant so and so even when sober.............i'm sure he was just waiting for an excuse ( sorry i was drunk) to say all those hateful things! As Rhune pointed out he's been sober for over 20 years and attended AA meetings throughout.....so why now start drinking againHuh?  As my mother always said " when the drink goes in the truth comes out" so now we know What Mel really thinks!

As far as I'm concerned, Mel can live his life as he chooses.  And stars do stupid stuff all the time.  But the price of fame is being in the public eye at all times.  He's apologized.  That's basically all he can do at this point. That and get the treatment he needs.  Time will tell if he's sincere.

eta:  There's no excuse for drunk driving.

What gets me is all the coverage this thing with Mel Gibson gets because he's a celeb, and that guy in Seattle takes guns into a Jewish center and kills and wounds several people, and it's out of the news after one telling.
