Celebrity Feud of the Day: Justin vs. Taylor

From Entertainment Weekly Popwatch

Stupid Celebrity Feud of the Day: Justin vs. Taylor

Sorry to be so late on this tip, but I'm just not cool enough to read Fashion Rocks, the Vanity Fair supplement in which Justin Timberlake, apropos of nothing in particular, dumps haterade all over Taylor Hicks. First, he implies that American Idol isn't exactly a reliable talent farm. ''I have a strange relationship with that show. I despise it, and yet I'm completely fascinated,'' says the former All New Mickey Mouse Club Mousketeer. He continues, ''People think he looks so normal, and he's so sweet, and he's so earnest, but he can't carry a tune in a bucket.'' Of Hicks' instant fame, JT says, ''Do you realize how much pressure it is to put on somebody all of a sudden? If he has any skeletons whatsoever -- if, God forbid, he's gay, and all these people in Mississippi who voted for him are like, 'Oh my God, I voted for a queer!''' (''Not that there's anything wrong with that,'' Lance Bass' former bandmate failed to add.)

Yikes. Timberlake had better watch out for the millions of Soul Patrolers who'll be waiting to ambush him, pelting him with old Sam Cooke 45s and jars of Metamucil. No word on what Hicks thinks of Timberlake, though if he's willing, PopWatch will broker a truce between the two singers: if Justin will refrain from criticizing Taylor (at least until after he releases an album), Taylor will return the favor and agree not to rip off Janet Jackson's top and cause a scandal that costs the networks millions in increased fines.

Yup, that is definitely a stupid feud. Stupid because I heard Taylor sing on those d*** Ford commercials and I have no idea how he won American Idol. I don't watch the show and after hearing Hicks, I have even less desire to, now.

Well, I for one, think one performer ripping into another is just not cool.   I'm not a huge fan of either guy, but who made Justin judge and jury, anyway?

Totally ridiculous!
An Entertainer with class NEVER disses another in public!
What's the problem, Justin's career not so hot these days?  Roll Eyes

I have NEVER liked Justin Timberlake.  Nor have I ever seen the big deal about him.  IMO he's not even attractive with his nappy head.  Least Taylor bears a resemblance to George Clooney.  Who IS attractive.

I agree Jeff, i have no idea how Taylor won American Idol.

But luci made a point, "An Entertainer with class NEVER disses another in public!"

I don't think it's morally right afterall since JT is the one who's always had scandalous news going on.

Coming from a guy who is more famous for being someones boyfriend (ala Britney Spears, then Cameron Diaz) than he is for is own work, I don't put much credence in JT's opinion. Roll Eyes

Taylor Hick's is talented, in his style, which is more jazzy blues than pop schlock.

As for the Ford commercial, I agree, it stinks.  But I doubt he had much choice in the tune or the commercial.  It was probably part of the agreement he signed when joining AI, and a small price to pay for the advancement of his career.

I don't know about Justin not being famous for his work.  He's had a pretty good solo career after departing N'Sync.  He's sold millions of copies of his album worldwide, and has won 2 Grammy's and nominated for a bunch others.  Collaborated with Black Eyed Peas for Where is the Love?  got nominated for Grammy for that.

Taylor Hick's I have no clue how he won.  He doesn't have the greatest voice, and I don't see where he fits into the current music market.

IMO, Justin Timberlake is a better dancer than he is a singer.

Easy listening, same place Clay fits.  I think they both appeal to the same audience, and that fits in with the kind of audience that American Idol tends to draw in huge numbers.  On the one hand it's not a radio playing kinda market, except on easy listening stations, but that didn't stop Clay from outselling every winner except Kelly.

Think about the kind of guests they had on this last season and what audience they are really appealing to with their song/artist selections on the show. Chris Daughtry doesn't really fit in with that, but Taylor fits it perfectly. Chris will go on to be the radio artist and probably the more respected artist by the general masses. Taylor will probably never win a grammy, but he'll have a nice steady market of mostly older women who buy his albums and play them in their cars.

Either way it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of American Idol how well he does or not.  Their money is not made from the artists they sign.  They make hand over fist on commercial space and product placement on the show.  Their ratings are insane, and for their finale this year they charged $1.3 million dollars per each 30 second ad. Throughout the 5th season, it was $496,866 per each 30 second ad on Tuesdays and $518,466 Wednesdays.  I don't think figures have been disclosed for how much Coke and Ford pay for their direct product placement, but it's got to be a huge amount.

They probably made up what they lost on Justin Guarini in one episode, sad as that is.

Now, despite that the sucess of the artists on there don't matter financially, I do think they are really hoping to sign an artist that will make them millions, and do want to be seen as a legitimate talent finder.  I think they are trying to sign artists that they believe are marketable, and Taylor is, just to a market that isn't mainstream.

At least American votes for the Best Singers. Here in Singapore where we had our Singapore Idol. We are down to the final 6 and at least 3 can't sing well, with 1 who's absolutely horrible. Lips Sealed

I think Clay attracted a much broader audience than Taylor will ever will.  Clay has a more pop sound, and has lots of young fans while Taylor has older folks.  I think I can safely say that Taylor will be forgotten just like Ruben and Fantasia.

I disagree with you there Deek.  Clay has a huge older audience or so I've heard firsthand and also read about.

Yes, Taylor attracts a different audience and yes it is older but there's younger in there too.  He is just geared to a different audience for blues, jazz and funk.  I would buy his CD whereas I would never buy Clay's.  And not in a million years would I ever buy anything of JTs.  As far as I'm concerned he's boy band and that's not for me.

And while I agree that Ruben has been forgotten, Fantasia has not.  She still has an audience and has her movie on Lifetime now.  Not that I'm interested in watching it.  I won't.  But she's still out there is all I'm sayin.

Not to mention Carrie Underwood going the country route.  Man, her career is hopping right now.  I only read about it occasionally because I'm not a country music fan.  But she's working it.

Hmm, I thought many of the Claymates were a bunch of teeny bopper fans.

I guesss time will tell where Taylor stands.  I thought most of the AI tours had younger fans anyways, and they are attracted to the younger hipper acts.
