Ray Nagin criticizes WTC delays during interview

NEW YORK (AP) — New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin criticized efforts to redevelop the World Trade Center site when confronted in a television interview about delays in rebuilding his city after Hurricane Katrina.
During the 60 Minutes interview, a correspondent pointed out flood-damaged cars still on the streets of New Orleans' devastated Ninth Ward. Nagin replied, "You guys in New York can't get a hole in the ground fixed, and it's five years later. So let's be fair," according to CBS.

The program is scheduled to air Sunday night. Text and a video clip from the Nagin piece were posted on CBS' website Thursday.

The chairman of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., the agency created to oversee the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site and downtown Manhattan, said that tremendous progress has been made in lower Manhattan, with the Freedom Tower, a transportation hub and a memorial to the nearly 3,000 attack victims under construction.

"We understand how difficult rebuilding a city after such destruction can be," chairman Kevin Rampe said in a statement.

Nagin, known for his blunt style, is not the first to compare the two cities. New Orleans residents frequently complain that the federal government's response after Katrina has been far more sluggish than it was after the Sept. 11 attacks.

He's got a point.  Besides, there was far more damage to New Orleans than New York. (And you also have to remember...they have FEMA helping out with the New Orleans thing.)  Wink

How was what he said bad? Think about it. In New York, there wasn't as much damage as in New Orleans (dont get me wrong, it was terrible, i dont mean offense to anyone). How can you expect them to get a whole town cleaned up in a year? Especially when they aren't getting that much federal aid to help.  Sad

I think the problem with it, is that people who are emotionally tied with 9/11 will be personally hurt or offended by his comment.  It's a lucky thing that he's not running for office in New York.

Nagin shoots from the lip.

The World Trade Center didn't have 3 days notice either.

Just think how much better off New Orleans would be NOW if the glib, shoot from the lip Mayor had really HAD a plan to address the effects of a serious hurricane, and to evacuate the residents.  It wasn't real smart to let 250 buses sit idle and be flooded when they could have been used to bus residents out of low lying areas BEFORE the hurricane.

The Governor of Louisana shares equally in not having a plan, right along with Nagin!

The Feds are not blame free but IMO they are way behind on the list of people to blame.  The Mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of Louisana were the primary people responsible for the mess that we now see in New Orleans.

New Orleans has been a disaster waiting to happen for decades.  It was mere chance that years of  hurricanes missed wrecking and flooding the city.   At least two years before Katrina, there was a documentary on New Orleans vulnerability, and the focus of it was the levee and pump system.   The city and state failed it's responsibility to have a plan in place to move people out.   Nagin is part of that failure, so he's defensive.

There are so many things that went wrong on so many levels, and I would agree he shares a big part in that.  All those busses that sat empty in 4 feet of water...so much could have been done to help and prevent that wasn't.  At the same time I think we/they should stop focusing on what went wrong then and focus on what's going on wrong now.  If New Orleans wants rebuilding it needs to get out of the past and work on the future.
