Crikey!

I just heard on the news that Steve Irwin has died.  The report is that he was stung by the barb of a stingray in the chest.

I guess there will be more news later.

Here's a brief exerpt from the story at News.com...

THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.

It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns.

It is believed his American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and is yet to be told of her husband's death.

Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".

This is very sad news indeed. we here in australia heard the news about 2pm today monday. At first I heard "unconfirmed" reports that something tragic had happened to steve.....within half an hour the news was confirmed that he had died

I and many others have struggled with this devestating news......all at first thinking "it can't be true".
Believe me when I tell you the whole country of Australia is in shock!

Steve Irwin was your typical aussie bloke....what you saw on TV is what you got in real life. I had the pleasure of meeting Steve and his lovely wife Terry about 2 years ago just after little Bob was born.  They had come into the radio staion where I worked for an interview and they were absolutely wonderful! Steve is  very down to earth, full of life, charming, warm and friendly and a very very proud dad! When he and Terry left the radio station everyone said how wonderful and friendly he and Terry were and that they were the sort of people you'd love to have at a dinner party!

Steve Irwin will leave a huge hole in this world I have no doubt. He was incredibly passionate about Australia, Crocodiles and all wildlife, conservation and most importantly he was passionate about his family!

Steve was an entertainer, an all round nice guy and bought joy to millions of people especially children all around the world.
Steve died doing what he loved....not only being with nature but also wanting to to share with the world the beauty that nature has provided us!

Steve we love you, we'll miss you and we will always remember you!

Steve Irwin is so highly regarded that it is now being considered to give him a "State Funeral". This is normally reserved for politicians and war heroes.

As the hours pass and the news sinks in of Steves passing we realiase just how universally loved, respected and admired Steves was. Tributes from around the world are pouring in and our thoughs are with his wife Terry and children Bindy and Bob.

To us he was just Steve the wild child who played with and loved crocs, the loveable larrikin that all  adored............the real "crocodile dundee"

I'm still in tears .......an aussie icon, an aussie legend has left us. Steve was more famous and far more approachable that Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe,Paul Hogan etc combined.

If anyone ever wondered what it wopuld be like to meet someone from Australia....just someone ordinary and everyday.......well......steve irwin is your answer! He eptiomises everything that is truly australian....down to earth, easy going, friendly with a big heart and passionate about everything....Steve you'll not only leave a big hole here in Australia  but in the rest of the world also!!!

Just to let you know:

There have only been 17 deaths by stingray worldwide.

Only 3 including steve Irwin in australia since records were kept!

had Steve been hit by the stingray barb any where else on his body he'd still be alive!

reports say that the barb going through his heart was just like a dozen daggers being stabbed directly into him! He apparently died almost instantly!

It's a shock.  He seemed  larger than life, it's hard to realize he's gone.  His life's work was to teach people about nature, and he did.  He made friends all over the world and influenced many.  I'm so sorry for his family.  The sudden loss will be hard for his kids, particularly his little boy aged 3, to understand.

Very sad news indeed!   Condolences to his family
Steve with his love of adventure was bound to die young!

The BARB from the Sting Ray was sharp as a dagger!

We enjoyed seeing Steve on the Jay Leno Show,
for he was so outrageous, along with being funny!
Definitely an Entertainer, the World will miss him!

Oh...I heard this also...what's more, is that I am a big fan of his show (my second favorite, after TAR), on Animal Planet. The worst thing that had happened to him so far was with the crocodile like snapped something (I forgot what) off of him and he got to have it replaced. That was bound to kill him! But it didn't.

I wonder what Jeff Corwin is thinking. I heard they were buddies, though other then their passionate love for animals I can see absolutely no relation.

Rest In Peace. You were so great. :cry2:
