Bindi Irwin to star in wildlife series

NEW YORK - Like father, like daughter. Bindi Irwin, the 8-year-old daughter of the late "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin, will star in a wildlife series to air on the Discovery Kids network early next year. The show's working title: "Bindi, The Jungle Girl."

Her father, animal lover and conservationist Steve Irwin, died from the poisonous jab of a stingray Sept. 4. Besides Bindi, he left behind her mother, Terri, and 2-year-old brother, Bob.

The show, now in the early stages of production, was originally "going to be a father-daughter thing," starring the nature-loving duo, Discovery publicist Annie Howell told the Associated Press on Monday. "Steve and Bindi were very enthusiastic about doing the show together."

Irwin will appear with Bindi in scenes filmed before his death, his manager, John Stainton, said in an interview on People magazine's Web site.

"Some people think that I would be afraid of them, but I'm never ever afraid of an animal," Bindi said in an interview Monday on ABC's "Australian Story."

"I just get excited and some that are dangerous I just think, `Oooh! What's going to happen?' and things like that."

I admire her for being like her father... But I wish she'd had/have a chance to be a normal 8 year old, not taking on this huge "responsibility" of keep her father's legacy alive

In recent interviews Bindi herself has said that filming the TV series and continuing her fathers work is something she "really really wants to do".

Bindi has kept commitments made before her fathers untimely death such as presenting an award at the recent Nickelodeon kids awards and other such events. According to her mother Terri Bindi is doing what she loves and is under no pressure at all to continue filming or making public appearances. Should Bindi want to stop she can at any time and Terri says that if she sees or feels that Bindi is struggling with anything she will put a stop to it!

I agree to some extent that she should be able to just be a kid however considering how she has grown up for her this is what kids do! It's what she's used to. In Steve Irwins last interview with Australian "Marie Claire" magazine he said Bindi was  like other kids her age and often you could find the two of them sitting on the floor playing Barbies, dress ups and normal kid stuff!

As time goes on all that has and is happening may hit Bindi like a tonne of bricks or perhaps continuing Steves work and spreading his conservation message may well be her way of coping. For a child that has grown up in front of us all, flown all over the world, and had a father that would put the energizer bunny to shame, taking things slowly and not doing what she loves could possibly be the worst thing for her.

let's face it none of us know at all in any way shape or form what the Irwins are feeling or thinking only they do and at the end of the day it is Bindi and her mum who know whats best.

It sounds like Terry is taking the right line....letting Bindi decide for herself what she wants to do.  However, it's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind, so I'm hoping that Bindi is having counseling to help her.  It sounds like she was extremely close to her dad, and doing the same kind of work makes sense to her right now.  I hope everyone is open to her changing her mind, should she decide to in the future; and that she'll feel no guilt if she does.

She is so cute... I saw a clip on one of the news magazines when they were talking about this the other day... her and an elephant.. just like her father with her grandfather before her, she's been raised with animals and this sort of thing her whole life.  I think that's why she seems to be doing so well with his death... I think when you grow up in a family where people work a job that could result in death every day, you live life fully every day.  She's old enough to realize the danger her father's work involved, and I'm sure it's one of those things that was just understood, that at anytime a wild animal could turn and a person could be killed... but if this is what you do, then you take those chances...

I think she and mom are doing a great job of getting on with life... Smiley
