More quakes hit central Philippines

Bring total to 5 since Friday night
By Nonoy Espina, Thea Alberto
GMA7, Agence France-Presse, INQ7.net
Last updated 08:31pm (Mla time) 10/21/2006

(3RD UPDATE) THREE earthquakes struck the central Philippines between 6:09 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday, bringing the total since Friday night to five, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

A GMA Network Flash Report, quoting Phivolcs, also said at least 41 minor aftershocks have been recorded since the initial intensity 5.2 quake struck around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

Where the first four quakes had epicenters in the vicinity of Boac, Marinduque, the latest tremor, with a magnitude of 3.8, was placed at 32 kilometers southwest of Lucena City in Quezon province with a depth of five kilometers.

It was also felt in Talisay, Batangas at intensity 2.

At 10:53 a.m., a 4.6 magnitude quake was recorded with its epicenter placed at 35 kilometers southwest of Boac.

This was also felt at intensity 3 in San Pablo City, Laguna, 2 in Tanauan and Batangas City, Batangas, and 1 in Talisay, Batangas and Puerto Galera in Mindoro.

A 4.7 intensity quake occurred at 6:09 a.m., also in the Boac area, Phivolcs associate scientist Leonila Bautista said earlier. This was felt in Manila at intensity 3 and in Quezon City at intensity 2.

Around 1:27 a.m., a 3.7 intensity tremor was recorded.

The first Friday night tremor was felt at intensity 5 in Batangas City and Bauan, Batangas, 4 in Manila, 4 in Quezon City, and 3 in Makati City.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are not strong enough to generate a tsunami, Phivolcs said, adding that they did not indicate a bigger quake was coming.

"From time to time, we should expect aftershocks but it's not powerful enough to cause damage," Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said.

In Boac, residents were gripped with fear after the series of quakes.

"We were jolted by the first earthquake, which caused a brief power outage in some areas," police officer Breizel Gayoma said in a telephone interview. "People found it difficult to sleep due to the aftershocks -- we were all on the lookout for the next one."

He said there were no reports of damage or injuries.

Tsunamis are usually generated by a quake of magnitude of about 7.0, it said.

The Philippines is part of the so-called "Ring of Fire" of volcanic islands along the western rim of the Pacific Ocean that sit on unstable earth plates and are prone to earthquakes.

Although about 10 quakes hit the Philippines every day, few are felt. Only three major, destructive tremors have been recorded in more than 30 years, according to Phivolcs.

This is yesterday's news, but I might as well start this thread, because there was another mild earthquake just now. They're probably aftershocks, but this is the first time I've experienced this many in 2 days!

Yes, I've felt them time and time again, altho I didn't felt one yesterday. Maybe it's not too obvious when you're not too high above the ground.  The ones I've felt are those that happened while in the office.

Phivolcs (Philippines Institute of Volcanology & Seismology) said that it's better to have these mild aftershocks because it lessens the chances of having a big earthquake (at least that's how I understand it). Something about the pressure of bumping tectonic plates being released slowly.
