'South Park' mocks Steve Irwin

POSTED: 3:18 p.m. EDT, October 27, 2006

LONDON, England (CNN) -- The cartoon series "South Park" has never been shy of courting controversy, but its latest episode has caused outrage by featuring the recently deceased Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin.

Swearing and random death and destruction are staples of the cartoon, which has been broadcast since 1997. Irwin, killed by a stingray's barb while snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef in September is the latest celebrity to be lampooned by the show.

The episode, aired in the U.S. earlier this week, shows Satan preparing to host a Halloween fancy dress party. Other guests include Princess Diana, Hitler and rapper Notorious B.I.G. Critics have been appalled by the Irwin character's depiction in a bloodstained shirt and with a stingray still attached to his chest. (I-Report: What do you think?)

John Beyer of UK TV watchdog Mediawatch said: "This is such bad taste and the makers of 'South Park' should review their decision to show it. Steve's family are still grieving.

"To lampoon somebody's death like that is unacceptable and so soon after the event is grossly insensitive.''

"South Park" maker Comedy Central defended the episode. A spokesperson for the company said: "It has offended people in the past and probably will again. Regular watchers would not be shocked."

The show holds the record for the most swear words spoken in one program, and regularly takes pot-shots at celebrities and makes fun of politics and religion.

Some tamer examples include George Clooney, mocked for his politically motivated Oscar acceptance speech, and lampooning Tom Cruise and John Travolta for their belief in Scientology. One episode with a depiction of a bleeding Virgin Mary so upset the Catholic Church that it was pulled from repeats of the series.

Regular watcher here...not offended.

(And for the record, I was. am and always will be a fan of the Crocodile Hunter.)

Just don't see what all the stink's about.  I mean...it's South Park, a cartoon for gosh sakes.  No person has ever been off limits for them to parody.  That's what I like about the show.

If they make fun of Jesus, Satan and even God, himself, than why the heck do people have their knickers in a knot over Irwin?  I mean, geez, really.

You really just don't get it do you. How would you feel if your Dad died tomorrow or someone you love and then they make a cartoon making fun of his death?

The man died within the last 2 months. His fans and family are grieving this and you have people trying to make a joke about it? What is so funny about death? I don't see it.

I know more about death than you can ever imagine!  But I have always believed in it as a celebration.  When we die, we go home so it's time to rejoice, not mourn.  There's nothing to be sad about.  He was here...now he's not...we are born, we live and we die.

Of course, you would not understand yet as you are undoubtedly much younger than I.  In time you will see that laughter is a blessing and there's no sense in taking things so seriously.

Oh, and death IS funny!  Haven't you ever seen Monty Python and The Holy Grail?  The Dead Collector yelling:  "Bring Out Yer Dead!"  That whole skit is hilarious!

I loathe South Park.  So of course I don't read it.   But anything that makes fun of Jesus, God and Steve Irwin is not even remotely funny to me.

I'm older that dirt.  And yes, I laugh and don't take too much seriously.  But death is not in the least bit funny to me.  Nor is Monty Python.

There's simply nothing to joke about when it comes to death.  Angry

Except maybe with Dumbledore in the Potter series? Sad

Freedom of speech means you're free to make a jackass out of yourself too.

For me this was a little over the line because it's so blatantly cruel to the family of Steve Irwin.  Most of the time Southpark is attacking a theme or belief, not an individual, or when they are attacking an individual they are being clever about it "Tom Cruise won't come out of the closet!" not just crass about it.  I guess I can understand that regulars aren't offended by it, cause I suspect regulars have seen so much already there's no shock value left in the show for them.  I'm more of a casual Southpark watcher, and I like it when they are being shocking in a  funny and clever way, not just shocking and crass.

Yeah, I'll occasioanlly watch it but it's not one of my, "Oh My Gosh it's 7:57 better get the pop corn started" type of shows.

I just don't understand what kind of person can think death is a funny thing.

I don't watch South Park, but have they mocked 9/11 yet? How long till they showed an episode about it? I'm curious if they'd go as far as make fun of 9/11.
