More kids get kindergarten 'red-shirt'

OMAHA, Neb. -- Kindergarten is often the first big step in a child's academic life.

Parents want their children to be successful in school, and that is why more parents are holding some 5-year-olds back a year, experts said. It's sometimes called "red-shirting," and there are a number of considerations parents should make before deciding when to send a child to school.

Will Buckley is among a handful of students in his kindergarten class that are already 6 years old. Across the country, parents are choosing to hold about 9 percent of 5-year-olds out of kindergarten an extra year.

Will's mother, Liz Buckley, said she wanted her son to have a successful start in school.

"(I wanted him ) to mature. Five was just so young. He would have turned 5 just two days after starting school," she said.

Jan Tesmer is an early childhood expert and she runs the preschool programs for Omaha’s Westside Community Schools. Tesmer said that kindergarten classrooms by law are set up to teach to a wide range of ability levels.

"We look at the child's emotional, social and intellectual development," Tesmer said.

The experts say red-shirts may initially have an advantage over their 5-year-old peers, but it goes away.

"Usually by third grade there is that leveling out of unevenness you might see in development," Tesmer said.

Teachers and parents have different ways of looking at readiness when it comes to school. Nebraska's Department of Education has some simple guideline, which include the health of the child, their level of socialization and their excitement to learn.

Educators said they like to remind parents that it is not a race against other kids.

Educators suggested that parents visit the school's kindergarten and find out what the expectations are. A preschool teacher or day-care provider can also help decide whether a child is ready.

In Nebraska, children must turn 5 by Oct. 15 to start the school year.

My youngest sister was 3 when she started. Her birthday is in December and you have to be 4 by Dec 31st of that year... But they do two years of Kindergarten in Canada, which I guess is like PreSchool?

I was homeschooled until I was seven...

Our Pre-K's have to be 4 by September 1; Kinders have to be 5 by Sept 1.  I started first grade at 5 (many years ago).  My b'day is Sept 27, and I would have had a wait another year in public school.  So my parents sent me to a private school for the first year so I could go ahead and start.  The only aggravating bit was that I was a year behind everyone when they started driving.. I started when I was 4. We lived in California at the time and you had to turn 5 by Dec 1st. I made it by 3 days.

I considered putting my 4 year old in kindergarten early, but they don't allow you to test in here if you are under the age of 5, like they do in some states.  The main reason I wanted to was because I felt like he was ready for that.  He'd already been in preschool a year and is able to sit still and listen, and has a lot of the kindergarten basics down, like being able to write his name, knowing the alphabet, etc.  Also, he's bright and another year of pre-school will only make him more bored in kindergarten when the time comes.  He's very tall for his age too, in the 90% for height in his age, and is taller than some kids who are in kindergarten now.  All that combined, we did seriously look into putting him in early, but it's an absolute no-go in this state.

I'm 15 and I turn 16 in June. I'm in grade 9. I'm one of the oldest kids in grade 9. So I think I was red shirted by it's because I missed the cutoff date I believe.

I have a friend, she's a Junior and she's already 18...Your supposed to be 18 by the end of your senior year or over the summer. She is doing her Senior year twice...so she'll be like 20 when she graduates. She will only be about 4 months away from 21.
